That is nothing out of the ordinary for prototype, testing, or "mule" bikes...all manufacturers do it. I saw some stuff that had gotten "cubed" by Honda back in the 70's that would make you cry like a school girl if you are a true motorcycle affectionado...I saw one bike after it was crushed that represented possibly hundreds of thousands of R&D and development...it would be priceless today as a collector bike. The dumpster full of Buell is a tragedy.. | ||

That is nothing out of the ordinary for prototype, testing, or "mule" bikes...all manufacturers do it. Correct, I used to be an R&D tech for Ford, you would not believe the amount of stuff scrapped, but it's all a tax loss. america may be different to the UK but we used to crush brand new cars and customs guys would sometimes be there to check. I remember one time some jobsworth customs azzhole had the original build sheet for a car and noticed it had steel not alloy wheels and no radio, he made Ford put brand new wheels and tyres on it and a new radio ,then crush it. Manufactures don't sell off cars or bikes used in development or testing just in case something breaks and someone gets hurt. | ||

I will say that back in the day, I enjoyed TTD sessions more than anything...wring it's neck before you scrap it. | ||

I'm sure this is no big deal in the business world, but from the perspective of a guy who recycles, it's incredibly wasteful, especially when you have people that would LOVE to have that stuff for spare parts. ~SM | ||

I have seen companies go bankrupt and toss $75,000 dollar equipment in dumpsters. If it was on the way to the scrap yard I would show up following the truck and buy the entire dumpster from the scrap yard. I go to the scrap yard maybe once a year to clean up my work yard and I almost always see something interesting the yard set aside. No titles but it would be a great way to stock up on parts. | ||

The photo is off an annual event at Waring Blender, Ducati, Ford, Buell and any company that develops and test products. The product must be tested. There is GREAT liability is letting any part, even a tire, get into the hands of the public. Some of you recall what happened with Chrysler years ago. | ||

What a waste if all that goes to the crusher...shame for good parts to be destroyed...I for one would like a complete spare engine..  Reminds me of something...Back in the mid 70's...a friend's father worked for a "major aerospace" company...I was over at his house one day helping him work on his car...(Putting a Cosworth top end on his Pinto engine)...he needed some bolts..so he sent me into the garage to dig thru several huge boxes of bolts... They were all aircraft/aerospace grade in every size, pitch, and material including all manner of steel, aluminum and Titanium. I asked my friend where they came from...he casually said "dump"...you want some?? ... The company would buy a large batch of fasteners for a project...subject them to every concievable test, select the best of the best, and throw the rest in the "dump". We are talking mega expensive bolts, nuts and washers... We made many trips to the "dump" and hauled out lots of good stuff... | ||

I think that's an older photo or something because everyone of the bike looks to have Dunflops mounted. Could be wrong but So's dumping all those bikes. NOW if the H-D board was in there I throw MY own bike on top just to keep them from getting away. | ||

Sure . . . and you'll have to get the details, I don't know them and I'm busy reading commercial manufacturing laws from 5 countries trying to sort out the "how long must parts be provided" . . . John DeLoren messed things up big time. Anyway . . . I wandered on to this with regard to the Buell wheels around 1995 when there was a Marchesini and a Performance Machine (hereinafter referred to as "PM") wheel options. We get dealers who had a customer who was ready to pop on a bike expect they wanted the PM instead of the cast wheels or vice versa. We get the "just send us a set and we'll send these back to you". Although we often did it we were very careful to mark the wheels when they were returned and to NEVER put them on a bike that was to be sold as "new". We'd use them when we build R&D stuff or bikes like the police bikes or Race of Champions S1s. Apparently Chrysler had done something similar but took the "sold" parts back (albeit likely new) and put them back on the line to be incorporated in new vehicles. Apparently . . and again I have no first hand factual knowledge (I'll get that from you) the shit hit the fan, they got sued and got stung big time. I'd guess it was more a "fraud" (selling a used item as new) issue more than safety or commercial. Let me know what you find . . . P.S. - I wouldn't be surprised if that dumpster photo was 4 years or older. | ||

That Chrysler story must be old because for over 15 years the motor industry has worked on just in time basically 90 + % of vehicles are built to order and the plants don't have the capacity to stock more than a day or so's parts. It costs more to put something back onto a production line than it does to throw it away, plus it messes up the schedule | ||

I'm sure it's at least 15 years old since the Harley guys brought it up in a meeting in 1997 when we were deciding how to respond to wheel change requests. |
