I must be stupid because I have the SM on my 02 M2 and I cannot seem to figure out the diagram.Cold specs are 3/8-1/2" cold.In the diagram it shows the front/rear sprocket with "A" being vertical freeplay.I have plenty of UP freeplay but very little down freeplay even after turning to various locations on the chain suppose due to chain sag but how do I find the center point.I guess my question is does the chain need 1/2" up and 1/2" down freeplay?I read somewhere where a 1/2" or 3/4" open end wrench was used but the chain itself is near 1/4" or more. Any tips (Message edited by scdobber on November 17, 2009) |

It took me forever to get mine adjusted. It's a PIA, at least the first time. I was warned though, don't make it too tight. If you do, you can really damage the engine when it gets hot and expands. The chain won't expand at the same rate and really cause problems. Better to be on the loose side. Keep looking around this site and take your time. Good luck. |

Ok,with the bike cold and the tightest part of the chain found I pushed down on the chain, used the center of the link as a "stationary" holding point for my caliper and lifted the chain as high as possible measuring the center of the same link and come up with 1/2".Would this be correct? I have more up freeplay than I do down.Is this a correct way to do it? |

I masking taped above and below the site hole, took a starting point, measured and marked a line at 1/2,5/8 and 3/4 from the top and bottom of the chain,as I remember the chain is 5/8 measured from the side.I had many tight spots so chose to average ,(both up and down)those within the recommended range-the loose dimension per sm as I turned the rear wheel-plugs out. |
