Hello all. I've been riding a Blast (no laughs please) for quite some time and have been waiting for the chance to upgrade to a Uly. It's the SUV of bikes I have always wanted. I've ridden my share of H-D Nightsters, FLXH's and Rockers as well as several other Buells at the H-D Open House in York since my brother's a demo rider and works for H-D. But I've wanted a Uly. There have been several tempting bikes on the forum, one of which I was crazy enough to drive to Wisconsin to get, but it sold (I'm in York, Pa). So, my search continued. I found one on eBay that looked promising. Brand new engine, all parts (or so it seemed) to get it back on the road. Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ewItem&item=270470806039&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT I was all set to drive four hours to pick this thing up tomorrow in Pittsburgh, but heard back from the seller, Gatto Cycle in Tarentum, Pa, that the bike doesn't have a seat or include the saddle bags and trunk, though the frames are CLEARLY visible in the pictures. I obviously need a seat and I very much need the luggage kit because my intent was to use this to make my daily 50 miles (one way) commute. I, like Doc, am a college professor. So, what do I do now? I think I should just walk away from the deal. I did email and ask for a $700 price concession so that I can at least buy a used seat and try to find used luggage. However, I wanted to get some opinion's before anything else. With the closing of Buell this Friday I'm afraid that prices will go further south and maybe I can find another deal and should wait though I was looking forward to putting the bike back together with my brothers, both of whom ride H-D's, one works for H-D and the other is a bike mechanic. So, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I am continually wringing my hands not knowing what to do. I sincerely value everyone's opinions. Thank you in advance, Morris |

IF all the unseen functional parts are included (muffler, airbox base and cover, etc.), go for it. A new seat is less than $200. I'll bet you can find a set of bags without brackets for a reasonable price or find aftermarket bags that'll work. Regarding prices, according to one thread in this section, Uly prices seem to be headed up! |

Tell them to shove it. There are plenty of them around. That certainly isn't one of the few left. Also, the new engine is a bit scary. Why does it need one ? I would keep looking untill I found the one I wanted, with no compromise. There is an ass for every seat and they will find the ass that fits their seat (or not seat). Keep us posted. |

Thanks everyone so far for your thoughts. I know a ton of people looked at the bike on eBay, but only two bids. Thought it would be worth a chance if everything came with it, but much to my surprise that's not the case. Not sure why it needs a new engine, that worried me as well. The seller is as mystified as everyone else also even though it's being sold by a H-D/Buell dealer. So, my search continues... |

There are a number of threads on here about Ulys for sale...and there's no laughing at Blasts. Just dig into the research...questions to the peanut gallery are great! You're going to love the upgrade. |

I would never purchase a motorcycle if it was in good running condition at the time of the purchase. Always test ride it before buying it! |

I would stay away from this bike, if it is not so hard to put back together they would have done that. |

Stay away from that bike... I suspect it will be more trouble than it's worth... The big question to me is why, oh why would it be in so many parts? |

Thanks everyone for your input!!! I sincerely appreciate it. Now the plots thickens...I just spoke with my brother who works for H-D. He receives a 20% employee discount on everything from oil to t-shirts to new motorcycles. He can get an 1125 for $6,995, minus his discount it would only be $5,596. I wonder if there are any Uly riders out there who would want to make a trade? |

So, this is the response I get from the HD dealer. The company that listed the motorcycle didn't want to get involved and get in the middle. I wouldn't buy a Buell from these people if they were the last ones on earth. I let this pompous jerk know that I hold three degrees from Penn State, a master's in business and am working towards a law degree while he nurses at the hind teet of a family business he didn't create. Morris As I can see you are suffering from buyers remorse and looking for a way out of purchasing this motorcycle. Auctionhouseltd was hired to list this vehicle in the condition as stated on his auction and the listing was extremely accurate. The photos "as seen" as Tim describes shows all of the parts that were included. Even the title listing highlights "PROJECT MOTORCYCLE" If you didn't want to bid, you shouldn't of bid! If you were unsure, you shouldn't of bid! If you regret bidding, you shouldn't of bid! So, I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Will we sell it to you for your new and improved offer ? Sorry, but we did not list the bike with a " Buy it Now or a Best Offer" option. So, I would recommend that you and Auctionhouseltd work out some sort of "sorry for your troubles" fee and let Auctionhouseltd re-list this motorcycle to someone that can read and understand the listing the way it was listed! I'm sure Tim at Auctionhouse will inform us of the outcome. Thank you for your email and have a great evening. Mark Gatto Gatto Cycle Shop |

With all due respect, professor, it appears to me that you bought it. But, not paying for it will probably only get you a severe scolding from eBay. Your next offense will get you severely scolded and sent to your garage. In spite of Mr. Gatto's "attitude," he's right (IMHO).It was an auction and yours was the last card up. |

Itileman, I did win the auction and I paid for the item. It wasn't that I didn't pay for it. As it turns out it was missing several items that were not disclosed. Therefore I asked them to make a price concession. They disagreed and so I didn't want the deal. |

Yep, in eBay if the item is misrepresented the auction outcome is void. |

I'm missing something if this is the bike you are talking about. It seems to me, also a college professor, quite clear that what was being sold was quite literally a bucket of parts. What am I missing . . . Congratulations on your new Buell.

We all have to pay for our education. Some have to pay more than others. Best of luck with your new project. The Uly really is a great bike. |

Black51, I'll bet you've lost some sleep over this fiasco. If they truly did misrepresent this bike on Ebay then I'd just walk away from it. Unless you are some ace mechanic you'll probably be way in over your head on this bike. This would be a perfect bike for someone that already has an 06/07 ULY to use as a guide to help them correctly assemble it. Just too many if's about that bike. I'm not even clear from the information that it has a new engine in the frame or if that is the original engine. I would think that Gatto Cycle Shop would have put it together if it was such an easy proposition. I also noticed that every single answer they provided to questions asked about the bike were intentionally vague and never really answered any of the questions. Walk away fast and enter a witness protection if you know what I mean. GATTO, fugetaboutit ! (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on October 30, 2009) |

Unless the auction changed after you bid (which I think Ebay precludes) it looks pretty clear to me. If it were my auction, I'd be ticked if a buyer backed out claiming misrepresentation. Looks like a fun project! I'll give you $2k for it, and I'll go pick it up. |

No matter what happens I don't think you'll lose money. Either buy the parts to finish that one or part that one out on ebay. |

I have always had luck buying within 100 miles between now and the spring. I would also echo previous comments: there are too many questions about the half assembled Uly. I commute 40 miles and have many paper intensive projects I tote back and forth. I have been pleased with the Buell bag that slides over the "triple something" on the back of the Uly. Between that pack and a tank bag, I even took a nice 5 day trip to the Moto GP at Indy this year. The pack retails for about $110 and has many compartments, including a padded portion for a laptop computer. |

Court, The question you've highlighted was my question to the seller. I emailed him three times for an answer and never received a response. I took for granted that if the bike had the racks on it the luggage must come with it. Additionally, I read the description as, "put it together in 72 hours" and you're riding. But no seat?? I need the bags for my 50 mile (one way) commute and need a seat obviously. So, since I didn't hear back from the seller I placed a bid. Fast forward a few days when I'm going back and forth with the seller and he says it's between me and Gatto Cycle and he doesn't want to get into the middle of it, NEVER getting any straight answers, and get the pompous response from Gatto. I told them to take a hike and got my money refunded. Now my search continues. Electra, thank you for your words of wisdom. I did walk away from the deal. I had every intention of putting it back together. One of my brothers is a motorcycle mechanic (certified with inspection license, etc.) and my other brother works at the HD Assembly Plant in York, so both are very familiar. We were going to do it together, something brothers could do and enjoy together. Also seems odd to me that they wouldn't have put it back together themselves, but who knows. Reep, I've sold thousands of items on eBay, mostly HD stuff, and have bent over backwards to satisfy people. If someone wasn't happy or something wasn't worded clearly, no harm. I simply cancel the auction and get my listing fees back from eBay and everyone is happy. I simply resell the item. If you checked my feedback you see that I have 100% and that's for a reason. Now, here is a HD dealer, their website claims they were "Dealer of the Year" for three years, so I say stand and deliver then. They are going to let an eBay auction tarnish their image? Are you kidding me? In this day and age when HD's aren't exactly flying off the showroom floor, I say what's happened to customer service and going the extra mile? Aside from teaching I also do computer and IT consulting and treat everyone with respect. You never know who the person is, who they know, or what you may be able to do for each other down the road. Case in point, I stopped by one of the many HD dealers in my area today and while talking to the sales manager heard about an IT issue they were having. I fixed it for them in about half an hour and gave them my email address if they need any help in the future. Not that I did it to get any favorable treatment, but I can bet they will remember that kindness if I purchase a bike from them. Paying it forward right? Hugh, I think the parting out would be the most lucrative move. And that's a good idea that I pointed out to them. Tbaxter, thank you for your input. I intend to put a ton of miles on it after I find "the one". I can easily put 1,000 miles a week on it between my 100 mile roundtrip commute and going to our little place at Dewey Beach every weekend for some boating and jet skiing. In all, the deal is over now. I know some of you have a different perspective and say, if you bid and win you should take it, but my experience selling and buying on eBay tells me that a deal should be fair. I'm not out looking to take advantage of anyone and was more than happy, in fact ecstatic, about getting a bike to work on together with my brothers and ride together with them (one has an FLXH and the other a Nightster). But the missing bags and seat were a deal breaker. That would have added another $1,500 to the cost of the bike if purchased new. |

>>>I took for granted Poor judgement for an online auction. I have no use for Gatto. I had a huge tussle with them over a bait and switch in 1999. But in this case the err was on your part. The auction, from my quick reading, was pretty straight forward, honest and fair. You erred in to "assuming" something quite different from the "AS IS" accompanied by a host of photos. Luck is shining on you that they let you walk. I'd certainly be more cautious in future dealings. By the way . . . that'd still been a killer deal. The price was well less than the price of the new motor. |

I guess some of us that plan on owning our Ulys long-term ought to watch for that to pop back up on ebay. That would be a handy source of spares not to mention a fresh engine when you hit ~150,000 miles or so... |

If you're still looking, we've got our ex-rental XT, 2009, racing red, 5100 miles, all bags (keyed the same like they should be!), and the only things missing are the handguards. I robbed them for an XP we sold, the guy didn't (understandably) want handguards with lighting holes in them. They're ordered, but the left side is on backorder; they'll either go on the bike or out to the new owner as soon as they arrive. Hit our sponsor page (Buell of Frederick MD) and give us a ring, or shoot me a PM here on badweb if you're interested. We're only about an hour from York. |

I have a pair of hand guards WITHOUT holes I'd gladly swap you for the ones WITH. I was going to drill holes in them. If you want them, let me know and I'll dispatch them. That XT you have would be a killer deal. |
