In the past couple weeks I've developed a false neutral between 2nd and 3rd gear. Today it got stuck and refused to shift past it (couldn't go higher than 2nd gear).

It was fine on the way to work, but after 30 miles I got off my exit and downshifted; and that's when it started. It stayed that way for about 20 miles of freeway on the way home (cruising 2nd gear at 6k rpms is not fun) then lurched, popped into third, and everything was fine after that.

Primary fluid has 700 miles on it (formula+)

I'm going to check to fluid level and clutch adjustment tonight. Then pull the primary cover and inspect the detent plate and mechanism if that doesn't help. I'm really hoping I don't need to split the cases... cause it sounds an awful lot like a burr on the shift drum to me.

Any other insights?

I'd take the inspection cover off and see what you can see. Doesn't sound like a clutch to me.

have you adjusted your primary chain lately? if you did, is it too tight?

Another symptom. I can downshift into 2nd gear fine, but upshifting is crunchy to impossible. It was always a little rough; but its been getting progressively worse, to the point of not engaging all the way and shuddering violently, to just not catching. I'm going to keep riding it like a 4-speed (2nd-5th) while figuring this all out. This really makes me think it has something to do with the shift drum, or hopefully detent wheel.

It still has more umphf from a dead stop in 2nd gear than any other bike I've owned...

And I adjusted the primary when I changed the fluid to within the manual spec. I don't remember how it was out of spec before the adjustment though...

Hopefully, it is the detent wheel clip that came off...otherwise...looks like you are on the right trail at least.

If it comes down to the drum being bad...if I was you, I would get a good aftermarket drum because it seems that the stockers are too soft and mar up easily..otherwise...get a new stocker and have it along with the forks and pins cryoed...depending on who does it, it could be expensive, but it will end the wear problem.

A really good place for advice on transmissions is R&D Motorsports in Clearwater Florida...Mark and the boyz are the BEST!!!...or Call Cycle Rama...I'm pretty sure they use R&D for their trans work...really quality people, that bunch.
