I discovered a missing tooth on my drive belt after I had changed pulleys and drove the belt very slack. Should I try to ride on with it, after readjusting tension and what's the best choice for a new belt on a 97 S1? |

I'd get a brand new one, latest model belt from Buell. The new belts are the best. Same size that fits the XB12Ss and the Ulysses models will work. I'm running one on my '97 Cyclone and it's working well. |

So are the belts backward compatible? Would the belt from a '97 M2 fit on an '08 XT? I've got one laying around. It'd be nice if it could be a spare. (Message edited by frito on October 27, 2009) |

Pulled from American Sport Bike website: OEM Drive belt standard on all 04-09 XB models (except 06 XB12X and 06XB12Ss). "We now recommend this belt for use on all 95-02 tube frame applications as well. Limited testing has shown it to be a superior replacement. If you want a less "experimental", but likely inferior, replacement for use on a tube frame model, see the OEM Tube frame/sportster belt. |

I don't have any reservations with putting the 128 tooth XB-S or XB-R belt (NOT Ulysses or SS belt, which is longer)) on a tube frame bike, it's been done successfully hundreds of times and have racked up lots of miles that way. The physical dimensions of the LIghtning/Firebolt belt are the same as the tuber belt, and the front pulley is exactly the same part. However, the reverse is entirely NOT TRUE. A tuber belt on an XB won't last at all. The tuber belt is more rigid and is ribbed on the back side. The reverse bending across the idler will kill it in short order, I'm fairly certain. I am also using the "newer" style belt on my X1. It is clearly much better built than the Sporstser one that came with the bike. |
