Just some of my thought process behind modifing an 1125r into an 1125rt. First on my list was the handle bars. Throttlemeister heavy, black powder coat and Ball-milled. With the heavy style, what little vibration the 1125r engine produces, is totally absorbed by the weight of the Throttlemeisters. Zero Gravity has developed three new wind shields for the 1125r. SR= stock replacement ~1” taller, DB= double bubble ~2.25” taller and, the ST=sport touring ~ 3.25” taller. I went with the DB for two reasons. 1st, I liked the looks better, 2nd I did not want too high of a wind shield for fear of noise and turbulence. My guess was just right and with the dark smoke color, I’m even stealthier than before. Every great touring bike has to have storage. Buell does offer some nice tankbags so I added their custom tank bag which will expand and has plenty of room, without getting in your way. Textile bags are only a stop gap and usually barely fill your storage needs. I had seen the hard bags on the Ulysses/ XT, old S3T Buells and the custom bags on the ST1300. What caught my eye was bags by Givi. They seem to have a lot of different models to offer that differ in size and shape. After researching the Givi lineup I decided on the V35 (35l each) bags. But alas, no mounting brackets for any Buell. After looking at the brackets they did offer, I decided to put my Engineering degree and fabrications skills to good use. Add some lighting from admorelighting,com and, I have a slick little setup. These bags are easily removed if I don’t need them with a turn of a key and a press of a button. I find it an unfortunate state of affairs that modern motorcycle manufactures have not found a way to make a stock seat that is comfortable over the long haul. I mean 500+ mile days without butt agony. From my ST1300 experience, I decided to let Rick Mayer perform his magic. After 6 weeks, my “butt bliss” arrived. It was well worth the wait and the $’s. For some reason sport bikes come with these narrow hard foot pegs. With the 1125r seating position, you always have some weight on your feet. After a few miles those foot pegs dig into your feet, even with riding boots. Sport bikes also love to have the pegs as high as possible. Looking around at the dealer, and checking the Buell forums showed me that the Ulysses foot pegs were 1” lower and twice as wide as the stock pegs. This was the easiest upgrade of all. Maybe 10 mins. Start to finish. After the creature comforts, I decided to tackle some safety concerns. First on my list was a headlight upgrade. Even with four headlights on the 1125r (two high beam and two low beam) I needed MORE light. I checked around for HID set ups and found a very reasonable priced pair from Xenonrider.com. BTW, GREAT people to work with and are willing to talk to their customers. This install required a little disassembly but not a major tear down, install and assembly was done in under 4 hours. Almost the best 4 hours I spent on this bike to date! I only changed the low beams because HIDs need a few seconds to warm up and reach maximum brightness. After the HIDs I was still in need of extra high beam/ driving lights. Over the years the most “light-for-the-buck” for me has been the PIAA 1100X. With their great light output and small size they fit into the most cramped locations. They REALLY reach down the road and show you what might be out there trying to do harm to you. The next safety upgrade was adding a Kisan TailBlazer. This is a small electrical component that flashes your brake lights and GRABS everyone’s attention. Couple that with LED lights and bulbs, you have a setup that will be seen, period. From Kisan I also added their license plate frame. It has amber sequential turn LEDs as well as red LEDs in the middle for braking (with the TailBlazer flashing sequence). For a little more light in the rear I found some LED turn signals that have two circuits in each light. I use one circuit for a running light, and the other for the turn signal. A little more time should be spent explaining the features and function of the Admore lights. They are very bright red LEDs that replace the “reflectors” that are stock on the V35 bags. Admore lighting has a neat little circuit card that enables the LEDs to perform 3 functions: 1) running lights 2) turn signals 3) brake lights. With the aforementioned TailBlazer in the brake circuit, these LEDs really light things up big time! Between the: Admore lights on the Givi bags, the dual circuit turn signals and the LED license plate frame, the back end of the 1125rt is pretty well illuminated in the daylight or the dark. The last items on my list to add the “t” to the 1125r were: Zumo 550, AmpliRider and Passport 8500 X50. With some RAM mounting bits, HD (heavy duty, not H-D) Velcro, Starcom headset and a few patch cords/ adapter cords I have a darn nice entertainment/ navigation/ warning system with a handy volume control. The Zumo, as well as being a biker friendly GPS, is also an MP3 player and is Bluetooth capable. By using the AmpliRider to get some more volume and volume control, I was able integrate all the features of the Zumo and Passport in a reasonably priced package. Adapt my XM radio. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I’m easy to recognize on my 1125rt, I’m the one with the ear-to-ear SEG! |
