I'm trying to give my cable the necessary slack so I can go through the other steps of removing the primary cover. I slipped the rubber boot back on the cable adjustment, and it's corroded to high hell. A little WD-40 got everything loose, but now I can't remember how the stupid thing operates! Both the top and bottom "nuts" that butt against the rubber will turn on the bolt, but they both twist the cable with it (which seems like a no-no), and the tension of the cable makes them want to snap back in place. The center jam nut seems to serve no purpose since I can't really get the top and bottom nuts to climb. Am I doing something wrong here, or is my cable screwed up? ~SM | ||

If the jam nut is rusted that bad, I would say you should replace the cable. Chances are the cable itself is rusty inside the sleeve. To loosen the jam nut and adjuster, you may need to hold onto the cable with a pair of vice grips while turning them. If you want to save the cable, be careful not to damage it too bad with the vice grips. | ||

So the top and bottom nuts should be able to turn independently from the cable sleeve itself? They must be stuck against the metal sleeve on the ends... ~SM | ||

Better yet, have a look. Bad phone pic, using a green LED light (sorry, poor lighting in my garage).  So, in the pic here, A and B are stuck together, and I can't tell if they're supposed to be or not. A is stuck to the cable sleeve, and if it turns so does the cable sleeve. D spins freely. E is also stuck to the cable sleeve and causes it to twist. So, out of all this, what's supposed to turn and what;s supposed to be stuck? ~SM | ||

if your going to replace the cable just take a pair of tin snips or metal sheers and cut it off. good luck. | ||

It shouldn't be stuck together. After loosening D you hold a wrench on E and turn B to adjust. More threads= tighter Less threads= looser If you can't get it unstuck you might be able to twist the whole cable as you go. It would just be the cable housing that's twisting, not the cable itself so it shouldn't cause premature damage unless the cable is corroded to crap. | ||

put a wrench on B hold stationary , put wrench on D and loosen towards B. D is the jam nut..... |
