seriously though the 06 is no better or worse than the newer models, most of the upgrades are retrofittable. best of luck with it

i grabbed the buell raingear from liberty hd , its pretty well made and it's on sale for 65 bucks. it has some fabric on the inside of the legs so it wont melt and it packs up tiny.much better than my old tourmaster stuff.

V8, congratulations. The '06 is a much maligned beast at times but the golden information you will find on this forum will sort 99% of the niggles before they appear.

I have an early build '06 and it is magnificent. To add to the advice you have already been given I would do some pro-active tasks if I had my time over:

- Remove the rear axle and coat the whole thing in anti-sieze (or plain old bearing grease at a pinch) - when I went to replace my first tyre the axle was white with corrosion and bears the marked surface to this day.
- Remove the front isolator main bolt and coat the whole thing in anti-sieze - some of these corrode and some don't. When they corrode into the frame insert it is a real pain so an ounce of prevention here may go a long way.
- While you have the rear wheel out doing the axle remove the belt tensioner assembly and coat the two mounting studs with anti-sieze - mine were really corroded when I went to replace my first belt. Again, an ounce of prevention.
- I assume that you will have the original loom guide - replace it immediately (some of the guys here have removed it completely). There are several potential loom issues at the headstock that are accelerated by the original guide. (sorry, I don't have the part number to hand but it is posted on the forum in several threads).

I have been chasing Dr Greg for some time but he has maintained a steady lead. My '06 has just turned over 55,000 miles and is still putting a smile on my face every day.

Wow! Thats all i can say... I just got home at around 1am last night from picking up my new 06' Uly. Weve gotten to know each other really well since I flew down to KY on Tuesday : ) Below is the recap of my first ride.

Tuesday - Getting to know your kickstand
i flew into IN early and caught a ride to KY to pick up the bike. After the papers were finished, I rode off through KY and into TN with about an hour and a half of heavy rain. After a couple of nearby lightning bolts, i decided to pull in to wait it out. It was then i realized just how inadequate my rain gear was and that i also needed some waterproof boots. Anyone here ever remember tying plastic bags around their feet in a truckstop parking lot? After i arrived at my friend's house in Maryville, i threw the kickstand down and got off only to watch in slow motion as the bike rocked forward off the kickstand and met the pavement. : ( Maybe i can make a necklace out of the broken clutch lever?

Wednesday - The Tale of the Dragon
I left Maryville TN and headed down 129. This was my first time in Deal's gap and it seemed that the rain the day before was a worthwhile sacrifice for the weather now was perfect. Not a cloud in the sky and a nice cool breeze. This was my first time riding the tail of the dragon and i must say i was a bit skeptical about passing through on a new bike. I was stuck behind a cruiser grinding pegs at 20mph for a few miles until he pulled over to let me by, then i was on my own and took off. I started to get comfortable at 30, then 35, then 45 and before i knew it i was at the end ready to turn around and run it again and again! The Uly handles like a dream and takes such little effort to glide through the twisties, no wrestling of the bike whatsoever.

Thursday - Donuts
Left Asheville, NC early and headed to Hickory NC to visit the Draggin' Jeans HQ. Picked up a nice pair of factory seconds and headed back out for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Again, the weather was perfect and the ride was amazing. I even went off-road a bit to take a nice HDR photo
Blue Ridge Parkway - Southern VA
until a parkway ranger came along. Of course, having just ran the dragon hard, i was hitting the parkway a bit faster than i should have but luckily no ticket yet, just a friendly "no motor vehicles more than 50 feet off the parkway" I wanted to tell him that it was a Uly, and as a Uly owner, we are subject to follow a different set of rules : ) It wasnt until i got off the parkway to find 81N (to save time)... then bam! Its funny how such a beautiful day can turn sour so fast and no amount of cursing under your breath will change the fact that some police officers just dont have anything better to do than sit with a radar gun while eating donuts... 66 in a 45 and i had to explain why the NY tag that i had on the bike was registered to a Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad. So i slowed down and followed the speed limit for a while and didnt get into Fredericksburg til late that night. Late enough for fatigue to set in and deer to become an issue on 15n & 20e as I saw several just walking along the shoulder. That is a road ive been down before (when i met a family of deer around a turn at 70mph many years ago...) and one that I have no intention of revisiting anytime soon, so i did what any smart rider would do. I slowed down and waited, waited a few minutes until a big truck came along behind me and I let him pass, then sped up and proceeded to use him as a meatshield.

Friday - The test of mettle.
I left my buddy's house in Fredericksburg, VA early on and head to Frederick, MD to meet with Joe at Buell of Frederick. He took the time to answer my stupid questions and look over the bike while i grabbed some oil and a filter for my next change. Then i left for what was supposed to be a 5 hour ride back to NY... that was at about 4pm.
All was well until i hit PA and the sky clouded over, thick heavy black clouds and the temperature began to drop. I put on my worthless raingear and kept it moving. The temp continued to drop and by the time i hit the mountains around Harrisburg PA, it had begun to rain. Really rain. Really really rain. Then began the torrential downpour and some of the heaviest fog ive ever seen filling in the rolling mountain valleys. As some points I counted only 2-3 white dotted lines visible at any one time and dropped down to about 45mph as I was being blown all over the highway by the wind and the passing trucks. I thought of getting off several times but knew that i would be soaked through and stopping was the worst idea, for to start again would be even more difficult and i was determined to get home. I kept it moving, focusing on the road, squeezing the life out of my handlebars and raising/lowering the windshield to see. This continued for five hours... One hour of which was in traffic. Friday night construction traffic, go Pennsylvania! I rode around the cones whenever i could and by the time i hit NY, i had sucked down so many energy drinks, cigarettes and cups of coffee that the fact i was soaked to the bone and freezing had absolutely no effect on me and for the last 20 miles i flew. At least 90mph the rest of the way past the trucks that would sling water at me like i was on a log flume, headed full force into the foggy unknown. Nine hours later, at 1am i arrived safely back home in NY, 1500 miles after picking up my new Buell.

What i have learned from this ride is that Buell is AMAZING. There is a good reason that we are here on this forum, raving about the Uly and sharing our stories, because these bikes can seriously do anything. Granted i have much more to discover as will come with time when i set off for Alaska and Argentina but as for now, my first 1500 miles, it exceeds any and all expectations i may have had and has kept me safe through some really intense moments. I love my first Buell and look forward to hitting the road again!

Well, you know that you've caught him. Recall my first '06 (S/N 044) hit the wall, er, deer at 55,400 miles.

Second '06 Uly (S/N 564) now at 21,722 miles.

V8, I will be there both days. Saturday is going to be a faster paced run. I don't really recommend that you try and keep up especially on a bike that you aren't familiar with yet. If you do show up for Saturday, feel free to hang back and ride at your own pace, we don't mind stopping for a minute before turns to allow you to catch backup.

Sunday is going to be a slower paced and more scenic ride, and I probably will be leading a group. I haven't gotten the GPS maps yet, so I don't know the details yet.

Look up 'Polly Heaters'. The whole kit is under $30 and they work well. I am going on their third winter, but they are nice in the summer also, for cool nights or rain. Easy to install.

Warm hands = good.

This year I got heated gloves too. On a ride to Daytona in March the palms were roasted, finger tips cold and the back of my hands were still cold. On a trip of 700 miles each way, below 45F, a little more heat is a good thing.

Froggy, oh im comfortable with her now : ) Besides, speed is nothing new for me, i would love to do the fast run. Unfortunately, i was only able to get off of work on Sunday, so i will be there! I would love to be in your group, how will i find you? (other than the obvious Buell)

Etten, those polly heaters, are they comparable to the Buell heated grips? They look like a great deal!

Thanks Mn!

The only big deal seems to be not having the factory switch on the right bar. They have been keeping my hands toasty for quite a while with no issues thus far. Well.....except for the chinese instructions interpretor had me hook up "hi" and "low" backwards. But overall, they were an easy install and do the job.

The Polly Heaters are inserted inside the bars, requiring a small hole for the wires to come out, with no change to the grips.

Horseman's run this weekend, im coming on Sunday!

So i found out that ticket i got in Southern VA will cost me $175 and 5 points... or the alternative, pay a local lawyer to appear in court for me and have it reduced to a faulty equipment charge, no points, for only $650. ouch. Opinions? Im torn...

Enjoy a photo of one of our beautiful Ulys perched high up in the Hawk's nest.

Lots of beautiful riding up here the past couple of days. Who's going to the Horsemans on Sunday?!

A lawyer from VA? Did they mail you crap soliciting their service? Sounds familiar....

Wouldn't surprise me if the cop was in on it too.

http://www.nysdmv.com/dmvfaqs.htm#tickets

If I get a ticket for a moving violation in another state, do I receive points on my NYS driver license?

The NYSDMV does not record out-of-state violations committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions. The exceptions are alcohol-related violations, drug-related violations, and moving violations committed in Quebec or Ontario. Under special agreements, traffic convictions in Quebec or Ontario are recorded on NYS driver license records and carry points. Except for violations in Ontario and Quebec, points are not added to your NYS record for out-of-state violations.

Send them a check and get on with your life : )

Froggy,

Thanks! The was the best and the worst news ive read in a while. Great because the VA ticket wont yield any points. Bad however because that ticket i got in Quebec a couple months ago WILL and worse yet, i never payed that one.
