Ok, so here is the story... Looks like I will probably get an 03 XB9R that is 6 hours away. He has the race ECM, a Jardine, and K&N filter and I assume he did a TPS reset when the ECM was changed. I'm probably going to need to take a train to get it, and I don't want the loud exhaust drawing attention since I'll have a temporary inspection on it. So what I'll want him to do is put the stock exhaust back on, keep the race ECM since it is programmed for the TPS, and ship the other parts back to me.

Would this work?

If absolutely needed, I think I can make a cable for ECMspy, but it will go to just bare wires that I'll have to fudge into the ECM. This is the least attractive solution because it will be late in the day at pickup, and a long and probably cold ride ahead to get home. The less time I'm fiddling with the bike, the better time I can make getting home.

I hate buying something like this site unseen, but it looks like the best solution for both of us since it seems he is in a money crunch right now and just dropped the price.

Wouldn't it be a hell of a lot easier to just spend 20 bucks and get the Jardine quiet insert? It makes it just about as quiet as the stock exhaust, and can be removed and replaced in about 2 seconds. Removing the Jardine and putting the stock muffler back on is a major pain.

If he still has the original stock ecm, it'll work with out needing a tps reset. It's already been set on that bike as long as it hasn't been used on any other bike.

I'd be wanting that along with the stock exhaust if I were going that route.

Honestly I want to put the stock muffler back on anyway, so if I can get it done before I pick it up and have the ECM work properly all the better.

Yes it'll work.

I have an '03 XB9S that I bought used. It had the factory race kit installed (K&N, ECM, race can) but came with all the stock parts. When the bike is due for NJ MVC Inspection (every 2 years) I put the stock exhaust can back on to make sure it doesn't flunk for noise. It may be a few weeks or months before I change back. Never had any issues with that.

Actually, assuming the present owner of your bike had a TPS reset done when he first installed the Race ECM, if you switch back to the Stock ECM, you need to do another TPS Reset.

Changing the exhaust has nothing to do with the TPS reset. All a TPS reset is doing is causing the ECM to re-learn were the zero mark is on the throttle. Completely unrelated to the exhaust.

This might be a bust... Guy didn't send me pictures like he said he would, and didn't get back to me about how I can send payment so he might have sold it to someone locally.

I guess this one went bust... Never heard back from the guy even after I offered to send the complete amount so he could have it Monday and we would deal with the paperwork in the mail over the next week.

Oh well, back to looking. Thanks for the info, might come in handy down the road.

Why exactly would you have to reset the tps again on the stock ecm???

I don't get it.

The reset tells the ecm where zero is when the butterfly is closed.

The stock ecm already knows this for that bike.
Unless it was installed on a different bike and reset to that other bike it doesn't need it.

I have a race ecm on my bike. Any time I want I can throw the stock ecm in and go.
No tps required because my stock was already set to my bike. That has remained unchanged through the 4 years of sitting in a box on a shelf in a closet far far to the left just behind an old pair of mocs that I can't for the life of me remember where they came from or how they got there : D

My only concern about running a race ecm with stock exhaust is a possibility of running rich. And maybe even lean in a few places.

The race ecm has different fueling maps and a more advanced ignition curve.

I would be constantly wondering if the exhaust and air intake was too restrictive for it.

In all my years here I have yet to see anything that verifies it as being good or bad but I tend to be overly cautious when it comes to things mechanical.

It would not be long until I had a cable made for ECMspy so I could see and log what was happening. I have the software now, and have had an FTDI USB to TTL serial board for a while (was for a different project that never happened), just need the special ECM connector.

But on to the next offers by the looks of it, Next up is a completely stock 03 which is really what I prefer. I'll mod it with what I want when I have it. Alternate is one that has the Buell race muffler that I'll need to change as soon as possible. The only problems with these two bikes are that they are not near any form of mass transportation, so I'll have to find someone to drive me there or complete a towing rig.

Metal, in theory you wouldn't need to reset the TPS again, but it a good practice you should do anyway, especially if the ECM was swapped out early in the bikes life. The TPS sensor "settles" over the first few thousand miles of the bikes life, so if you swapped to a race ECM at 1000 miles, then put the stock one back on at 10k, a TPS reset would be a good idea. It only takes a few minutes to check, and another minute to reset it should it need it.

Yes it is a good practice, I agree 100%

But it will be very much within operating perimeters allowing an owner plenty of time to make or buy a cable without worrying about rich/lean issues which could be potentially worse.

I would have mentioned that but the OP had already made mention that he was in the process of making a cable.

Just bought the 4 pin connector, and I have an FTDI interface already but might buy the cable type because it would make a nicer package than the interface that I have now. Sad to say that I'll probably have the cable made long before I find a bike to use it with.

I also have a little tiny Fujitsu u810 laptop to use with this tuner and I certainly wouldn't put it past me to get a Palm to run it on too.

Just FYI,

I had the Race ECM with stock exhaust on my 9 for over a year. It is fine. The fueling down low isn't as chunky as the stock ECM. The only drawback is a slight hesitation when you slam open in to WOT. Rolling in to it and the bike is fine.

Rode with it that way for brief stints to the market and 1000-mile weekends.

YMMV.
