Please help me out if you can . I've posted in the Knowledge vault but have had no replies. My lack of knowledge and skills on this issue has surprised even me. What should be a fairly simple job has turned into a disaster. Help me get my 2000 S3T back on the road before the snow flies. If all else fails, the dealership will fit me (and my wallet) into their busy schedule next Friday. Thanks. I have cut and pasted my Knowledge vault postings below.  I've been at it all morning and am no further ahead. I'm frustrated, pissed off and probably not reasoning very well. 2000 S3T with a snapped idle control cable. I have a new cable, it's now connected to the throttle body correctly, but I can't get both cables hooked to the throttle and get the two housing parts together. What am I missing? I've adjusted for as much free play as possible , but I just don't seem to be able to make it fit with both cables attached!!!!! Please help before I blow a blood vessel in my head!( Or have to find a way to get it to the dealership and admit defeat!) Almost one week later and I am even further behind the eight ball. If anyone out there can help me I would really appreciate it. When I installed the idle control cable I noticed that the Throttle cable was badly frayed and had to order one of those as well. I managed to get both cables on but the cables are still too tight. To make matters worse, while turning the throttle grip against the stop, I snapped off the little "Tit" on the throttle housing that keeps the assembly from rotating on the bars. Does anyone know if only the non - electrical half of the housing is available and if so would someone happen to have the part number? Please help if you can. The end of the riding season is soon approaching and I'm missing out. | ||

Is it FI and if it is does anyone know if those parts are different from the carb part, I am thinking no? | ||

Thanks Frank. It's actually a molded part of the throttle grip housing. (The back half without the switches) It's an F.I. bike and looking at the manual tonight, there is a note about 2000 model year only bikes when it comes to installing the cables back onto the throttle plate. To be honest I am a few too many beers from having an objective look at it tonight, but will have a look in the light of the day and post a pic if I can. I appreciate the help. I hate it when easy things go bad due to my lack of wrenching skills. | ||

I'm going to either try to glue the little tab back on, or drill and glue a small piece of something back into the housing to act as a stop. If anybody has the part number for the back half of this Switch Housing it would be greatly appreciated. Frank, as usual sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar and always ready to help.    | ||

I just ran a small screw with the same size head as the tit, in to my back plates. PO had removed them, so he could run generic bars. | ||

Thanks Guys, I just crazy glued the tit back on using a piece of a nail as a strengthener through the middle. If that holds, I'm still back at square one with the installation of the two cables. As I mentioned, with the adjustment turned all the way back, hooking up to the grip first, hooking up the idle cable at the throttle body, then turning the throttle against the stop to get enough slack to install the throttle cable to plate, when all is done and everything connected the throttle sticks open and wont spring back.(Too tight) There is absolutely no slack at all. (And the routing is fine as I routed the new ones beside the old prior to removing the broken cables.) Also, the part numbers on the new cables match the old , so I know they are right. What gives? Any ideas? | ||

That little tit is not really necessary imo. I filed it off during the installation of my LSL bars on the X1. If you tighten the screws enough it will be no problem. As for the cables, I don't really get how you can not get them hooked in the grip. You need to have the grip on the handlebars, if you attach the cables to the grip while off the bars, the cables will not be long enough to slide everything on together... Do you have the original handlebars or did you install ape hangers? I assume the cables you took off and the cables you are installing have the same length... I have a 2001 S3 in the garage. The throttle grip is installed on the original bars and is hooked up as per the manual.With neither cable yet attached to the throttle body, the cables and grip move smoothly with no binding. I've attached the Idle control cable to the throttle body first, (as per manual) and, as you can see from the attached picture I am about 1/4 to 1/2 inch short of getting the throttle cable installed.   With the throttle plate held open and twisting the grip forward (Stretching the idle cable?) I can,( with the help of a set of pliers), just get the cable into the bracket. Once both are on though, it's too tight and the throttle will not close on it's own. I'm feeling just about too stupid to live at this point, but I'm hoping someone here has done this before and can point out what I'm doing wrong. I'm not ready to admit defeat just yet!! | ||

and the adjustments on top are all the way screwed in? You don't see any threads on top? This looks like they might be all the way out... ??? Easy to do wrong... | ||

It is also easy to get them backwards. I've done that twice. | ||

Thanks Don, I have confirmed that they are correct. It's back together, but with some binding still present. Also snapped the idle adjuster cable, found out the air box gasket is completely rotted as are the breather bolt gaskets and the cable bracket is bent completely out of shape! Other than that....looking good ! I actually have a couple of good Buell guys at the local dealership so I guess I'll limp up there on the back roads and let them have a look at it. I'm kind of like the reverse of King Midas. I'm King Feces, everything I touch seems to turn to S**t. Oh well, live and learn. |
