I have read a lot of archived posts, including DCBrag instructions, and also Ratbuell's note about using a front cover on the rear, to avoid clearance issues b/t pcv and tank. Questions: 1. The front and rear pieces look different in photos I've seen - the front will definitely fit on the rear? 2. Gaskets: is it possible to re-use good, new gaskets (replaced in March), or are the gaskets needed different than what would be on the bike now? I assume you just toss the upper gasket, since the XB covers allow you to delete the middle piece. If getting new gaskets, is all you need (2) Part # 17353-89C gaskets? 3. I'm getting into this because I will need to take off the rocker covers anyway, to fix a leak in one pushrod tube base. So while I am doing this and can relieve the tension on the valve springs, would this be a good time to look at replacing the oil pump gear with the updated version? 4. So far, I have following parts for the job on my order list: (2) 17605-00YB Front covers (2) 17606-00YA Grommets, viton, black (2) 17607-00Y PCV valves (2) 868A Hex socket button head screws Gaskets... reuse, or part # 17353-89C for new ones needed? Are the 868A hex socket button head screws used to plug the drain holes in the heads, where the hollow bolts are now? Thanks in advance. Your cover/grommet/PCV numbers look right. I did the same conversion on mine this winter, used 2 front boxes (god, I hope it works, been riding it that way for three or four months now! lol). The only difference between the two is where on the cover it places the PCV valve hole; a front box on the rear head puts the valve at the rear, so it doesn't hit the underside of the tank. I just got plain ol' bolts from Lowe's to remount my carb bracket; I think they're just 1/2"-16 thread, but if your number is from a late XL or similar, you should be just fine. I never reuse gaskets. Not worth the potential hassle compared to the minute expense. They *say* you can reuse the late style coated metal shim ones...but again, for the "expense", I just get new ones (I used the new HD set on mine; the coated metal is right up there with aftermarket for durability, they don't use the paper crap anymore). Not sure on the part numbers though; I got the "top end kit" because I figure at some point I'll be able to use the rest of it. On something. Eventually. But for re-use...think about it. You've crushed *and* heat-cycled that gasket. It isn't going to spring back when you remove it, not completely. But...it's your nickel For my money...they're pricey, but worth it. Get the NRHS Billet pushrod bases while you're in there anyway. Those one-bolt, one-pushrod bases are a joke when it comes to sealing; the one-piece billet bases with 2 bolts each are MUCH better. Got mine from Al at American Sport Bike. And if you don't have the bronze oil pump gear...do it. Cheap insurance (total cost: a gear, a pair of rivets, and a gasket). Did the change on mine a while back when I did the thunderstorm conversion with X1 cams. Just don't forget to mark your timing pickup location before removal (sharpie marker around the screw heads, tape, whatever) so you can put it back in the right place! |

I have the bases and collapsible tubes from NRHS already (came on the bike). I have ordered a zippers seal kit from Dan. Now just need the stuff for the xb rocker cover conversion. And since there's no way I want to get into this again soon unless I have to, while I'm in there, I might just do the oil gear, as well as cutting down the timing cover. |

Does anyone have a copy of those dcbrag instructions...Unfortunately that site is long gone...I wonder if anyone archived all the good info there... Gray |
