Went for a ride this morning with the local Buell club. Got to the top of the mountain and someone points out I have oil on my rear tire. It's coming from the trans vent tube. Got some towels and dried the tire as good as I could and got it home without incident. Thing is, it didn't leak a drop on the way home, a good 60+ miles. I haven't changed the primary fluid for about 3000 miles. Now the way up the mountain I was riding pretty spirited. Has anyone had this happen transiently like that? I know the seal can go bad in the trans when that happens also, but does it leak more constant when that goes bad or what? I don't want to pull the trans if I don't need to.

I just had this problem 2 weeks ago. Go to any auto part store and get a cheap fuel filter, A plastic one that is pretty big.
On the right side of the bike there is a hose, It starts right next to the starter and goes up into the tail section. Pull it out of the tail and install the filter just behind the frame and watch for it to fill up. This will buy you some time but not much! If the seal is even remotely bad it will fill the filter and get worse very soon!

Make sure you get the updated seal from AL @ American Sport Bike

That can happen due to water in the tranny that flashes to steam and causes the expulsion of oil out the vent tube.

Or it can be from a leaking crank seal.

Hmm, Blake how does water get in there, just in the course of the motor heating up and cooling down, condensation? Motor has 26,000 on it, when do those seals start dying? Meanwhile until I confirm it I guess I'll try your trick Russ. Thanks.

My bike has 11,250 miles. They can go at any time......I first noticed little speckles of oil up by the tail section and then more coming from the tail itself. I thought that was strange so i started watching it more. Within 3 days it was a major problem. I took the bike for a ride 110 miles with the filter on, At 80 mph for 18 miles the little filter i installed was half full! So i waited about 1/2 hour and it all drained back into the tranny. Then i rode the bike 88 miles at 90 mph and when i got there the bike was just covered in oil and dripping all over.
