I just picked up this brand new Pro Series Race Muffler for my X1,and I have an X1 pro series race header on the way.
I was just wondering if I need to track down a 94002Y Race Muffler retention kit (http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/B034-263581.pdf) before I mount it, or will I be fine with a race header shoe and 2 clamps? |

For under $10, I'd get the kit. Matter of fact...I did. I have it on both my tubers, both with race mufflers. Have your local dealer contact Vintage Parts Inc.; they show it in stock and can ship it to your dealer. If they can't get it, send me a PM and I can order one for ya here at work. |

I have never seen that retention kit before. I've been running the Pro Series header and muffler for 30,000km's without it and the front spigot is just starting to crack. |

let me ask you a question: where did you find the pro-series kit? I didn't know there were also the headers available, I always knew that for X1 there was just the can... |

I'll have to pull out my 2000 catalog out later to get the part numbers for you, but the pro series had an intake, race muffler, race header, and slip-on(supertrapp) for the stock header available for the X1. That was one of the last brand new race mufflers available. I know of one other at Glendale Harley/Buell, but don't know if it's the race or slip-on |

the X1 race kit was 82000-99Y, which included exhaust pipe(header), muffler, air cleaner assembly(k&n and venturi), and ecm. All parts were available individually, but I don't have their part numbers. A buell marked supertrapp was also available as a slip-on. Ratbuell, PM sent regarding the retention kit, $10 is cheap insurance on an unobtanium part. Thanks. |

Chilli, the "retention kit" is required to prevent "Polevaulting" the mufler halves seprate and the rear catches the pavement tossing you over the front, and on to the road, its happend to others on this forrum its serious, I would get that muffler fixed and get the kit.. |

And people say the shock recall is overblown. |

Thanks Oldog, it hadn't clicked to me that it's designed to prevent that. I must be lucky - my muffler had one of the mounting tabs at the back broken off ages ago so I've only had one bolt there (and lockwired the two clamps at the front). I check it on a routine basis, no problems until last week - bolt and locknut gone! I replaced the bolt and took it to a muffler shop this week to see about replacing it with something quieter and that doesn't need repacking all the time. While we were checking what would fit the guy from the shop spotted a hairline crack in the front of the muffler - it's being replaced tomorrow! |

There's a maximum number of "quick fixes" allowed Lemonchili_x1, if you go over allowance the most crucial one will quickly fail. It's like having so many print jobs in queue... I suspect the bolt and locknut came loose at precisely the same moment you hot-wired your ignition! -Mike |

Nothing at all like that entered my mind sir I just know how roadside repairs tend to get pushed to the back of the mind when they seem to be holding up okay. Been there once or twice... Cool that there's still new parts available from the aftermarket for our tubers, and as I said on another thread, badweb is cool, there seems to always be someone who can and will help someone else out. |

i tried to purchase the retention kit for my race pipe yesterday. the dealer closest to home (the dealer we are all familiar with, we sell buells with costumer service) and they would not sell me one! some bad about they don't know how much they are, or don"t know how much to charge me for it. what's up with this? they had three in stock, said they would install it for me, but I would die before I would let them touch my bike again. do I need to try another dealer? |

Well if they have the part in stock and won't sell it to you, I'd talk to the manager if you can to see what's up. Can't get a straight story, a new dealer is probably in order. |

I had the same problem; dealer would not sell the kit unless THEY installed it. I've lockwired the clamps and do a pre-ride check. |
