I bought a new BAKER shift drum and had my friend install it and once reassembled into the tranny assembly the shifter forks were not sliding on the drum they are all chewed up.....So i called HD to asked about the price for a new set(3) and they said $205 and i asked my favorite question how long to ship? They will be in next Thursday 6 days!!! LOL I called BAKER and got a set for $75, Overnight $40, Here on Monday $110. This is the last thing for me to fix/Upgrade. The only things on the list now are the front and rear caliper rebuild, new front and rear brakes installed and a new front rotor. |

So how much difference does the Baker shift drum do? How much did it cost? I recently rebuilt my dad's transmission in his FXD and they're pretty simple, so I may pull my tranny apart and change a few things. |

IMO the Baker isn't enough of an improvement to warrant spending the $$ unless the drum or detent plate already need replaced. OR if you're doing it from a reliability standpoint. If you're looking for a smoother shift though.. it's not a very big change. Just my opinion though. |

I Dont really care for a smoother shift. That is just what it is retailed as..I want quality not B.S. HD parts are !! And i dont care how smooth it is, I just actually want it work! "unless the drum or detent plate already needs replaced" LOL Have you seen the flimsy clip holding the detent plate on!!! I was literally stupefied by the thinness of this part!!! |

That's the other reason. I had that retaining clip break on my sportster at 12,000 miles. |

I had those Baker internal parts installed, and could not believe the difference in shifting, almost as good as my old Yamaha. It's the old 'snick' not quite as good, but pretty good, and an improvement I could perceive. It's gotten a bit better as it wore-in even. |

Think I'm having the same problem, can't find neutral at idle and get a false neutral almost every time I shift from 3-4 while on it. Is using a 2x4 in place of the locking bar ok or should I fab one up. |

I was just riding it easy; I had just left the shop for a replacement brake lever (this being before I knew how to change the levers) and all of a sudden I couldn't shift out of 1st or into neutral, so I turned around and rode the bike in 1st down the block back to the shop. |

Had to go to 3 stores to find the right size piece of aluminum, 15 bucks but still cheaper than ordering the tool. |

The OEM sprokett holding bar tool is 4 1/8" long X 1" wide X 1/4" thick. The edges on each end are camfered a little on each end to sorta match the sprokett teeth. Kinda, sorta like /-\ Maybe a piece of hardwood would work but a piece of fir 2X4 was too soft. Later,,, De |

Home made tool worked very well. Detent plate was still attached (loosely) but there were some shavings on the drain plug. Getting a 1 7/8" socket tomorrow and pulling the tranny, good times. |

I was getting a false neutral in 1st to 2nd and 4th to 5th. I was also having problems with the clutch slipping in 1st gear and lurching forward intermittently. One time me and brother were racing down to the freeway exit and there is about a 1/2 mile where its 2 lanes and straight. Just before a hard left corner at end and the off ramp. I was in 5th gear doing 120mph Then we usually down shift and sweep the corner, No not today the tranny did a false neutral going into 4th and i almost ate chit. That was some scary riding there! I had no down rev motor braking! It was at that moment i knew the tranny was done for! I bet it would feel the same if the belt snapped too. (Message edited by preybird1 on September 17, 2009) |

I get that from 5th to 4th too, it happened a lot last year, not once this year, I've been using Syn 3 in my tranny. I make sure to press firmly on the shifter now too, so it's probably a combination of the two. It's unpleasant, having the tranny rattle around between gears, can't imagine doing that at 100+ diving into a turn! |
