So, after getting Buell in my blood, the bike up and running, and smiles on my face, I go and get wiped out.

Running in the left lane I signaled, both light's and arm, and moved into the center turn lane.

Coming the other way a car that didn't see me, moved into the turn lane right in front of me. I went to dodge and he dodged right back into me.

Damage: Bike is totaled. I'm stilled in the hospital after 12 days with 10 more or so to go in rehab.

The good: My head is okay minus a few stittches, not bad for no helmet. My legs work and I can walk with a big ass back brace. And I'm ALIVE: )

All I can think about is getting another Buell and riding again.

I love the X1 and will look to get another, but I'm really thinking about a S3T. I travel a bunch and having more of a touror might be the way to go. I bought the X1 for $2600.00. It had 144000mi and was in good shape. I don't think I'm going to find another deal that good so easy here in Northern Arkansas. Maybe, god willing I'll find my way into / onto a Ully....

Anyway, just wanted to wine a little bit about my loss. Have a great day all!

Take care, work hard in rehab. S3T is a fine choice for touring. Keep checking Craigslist in AR & Springfield or SE MO for another deal.

Good wishes for your recovery.

Okay, so here's the tally of busted and broken bones :0

Two broke scapulas (shoulders)
one broke left clavicle (collar bone)
eight broke ribs: 3 one side, 5 other
three/frour fractured vertebrae L1 - through somewhere or other...
And some road rash on my left side, with a few stitches above my left eye.

But hey I can type! my forearms work, and my shoulders should get better. Still can't lift my arms. Still, I know I'm very lucky and blessed. Thinking that my shorts, tee shirt and tennie's days are over. Want to get an armored jacket.

THANKS FOR ALL THE BEST WISHES! GREAT COMMUNITY HERE, AND I'M GRATEFUL TO BE A PART OF IT.

Glad your are alive and healing, wow, that's quite a tally of busted parts! Too bad about your X1.

Tell us which way you both dodged so maybe we can learn from your experience (I've considered this scenario a few times and have been unsure of how it would be best to avoid it).

Post pics of your new bike and helmet when you are ready to roll again.

Hi Fellas,

Okay, okay, I got a good helmet. Full face modular. I like it, and it works well. It's just hot in the summer, and I fell victim to the old, "I'll be right back, just a fast errand." - BS

As far as dodging: As stated we were both in the center turn lane. There were cars coming up fast on my right, so I could not dodge that way. My left was more clear, so I went to my left. The car could not go to his left, so he went to his right.

I believe he should have just hit the brakes, but I can not be certain. I was in the turn lane first, and had the right of way, but I do not believe the car driver was careless. The cars in front of me could have blinded him, but he still should have waited and cleared the lane before entering it. In the future will make sure I have a bigger gap between me and the vehicles ahead, and go all the way to stop/light if I need to.

Sad thing about my X1, is that I never took any pics of it!!!

When it comes down to "right of way" versus "physics"....I always defer to physics. I'm sure you know this now. Cages don't see us - and if they do, they don't give a s**t. "I'm bigger" is the mentality 99% of the time.

Glad you got a lid. I used up a modular last year, it's now a 3/4. Did its job though, and so did the Joe Rocket mesh/armor jacket and Buell turbulent gloves (gloves I still use; jacket was cut off at the scene before they loaded me on the chopper).

Don't dress for the ride - dress for the landing.

Listen to the PTs. They can be slavedrivers...but they know their stuff. They got me back together and on the road less than 4 months after shattering both my legs, and I was back at work in 5 months.

Heal fast! : )

Wow, sounds like there really wasn't a way out, glad you survived it!

A friend is still in the hospital (two weeks and counting), and a brother-in-law lost a leg and is learning to talk again after accidents this summer. Head injuries with helmets, they would be gone now otherwise.

Get someone to take some pics of your bike for you, you may want to see them someday.

Thanks Guy's

Ratbuell, the PT's and OT's have been awesome! I feel very lucky and blessed that such good people are really working to help me get better. It's easy to see how strong bonds develope. I'm really happy with my Hospital and rehab experience over all. I bitch and complain sometimes, I hate the "Turtle Shell" brace I have to wear, but these people tell me the truth and motivate me to do what I have to do even when I don't want to.

BTW: Wish I remembered more of the chopper ride! Always wanted to be on one, all I remember iS coming to for a moment seeing a guY in a helmet and flight gear and thinking, 'wow, I'm on a chopper.....THEN, OH SHIT, I'M ON A CHOPPER, GOTTA BE F'ED UP!" Then asking were I was going and hearing "Springfield" before passing out again.

One of the things I learned in the MSF class was the cars ALWAYS have the right of way (actually the right of weight), no matter what...

Whisper...I'm jealous. I don't remember a thing about mine last year. Got a 12 day blank, actually....but I had a ride on the chopper too apparently. Always wanted to take one of those rides (not for medical reasons)...and don't remember a thing about it lol. My first memory afterwards was the ambulance ride from shock trauma to the rehab hospital.

Best feeling I had in the rehab process was throwing my torso brace (turtleshell) on a bonfire and watching it BURN, 2 months and 2 days after the wreck. GAWD I hated that thing (I did three ribs/4 vertebrae myself, along with a collapsed lung, bruised heart, lacerated liver and torn R rotator cuff - *above* the waist, anyway).

The PTs and OTs I had were also awesome. Slavedrivers like I said - less than 2.5 weeks after shattering both legs, with NO casts (but a couple lbs of titanium inside), they made me walk the parallel bars and it was the longest 11 feet I ever walked. But, they told me to do it, and I did it, and its all been downhill from there lol.

Keep your spirits high, remember they won't tell you to do anything that'll make it worse, and TELL THEM if you get sharp pain. A "workout ache" is fine...but sharp pains mean STOP NOW.

Glad to hear you're still among the living -- There's a Green ST3 on the Denver Craigslist -- as I recall asking 3000 and only has 4000 miles -- The wife keeps bugging me to list mine -- but when I showed her how little they were selling for she agreed that we might as well keep it -- Who'd have thought that Depressions could have upsides --

Those brief moments of clarity make strangely good memories, good stories of how you survived if nothing else! Glad you are recovering well, sounds like you've got a good attitude.

Hey guy's,

Just a quick update.

My insurance company had my bike under-valued. They say it's worth $2,900. I said that's fine if you can go find me another one in as good a shape and mileage for that. I'm about $1000.00 off their number for bike, accessories, etc. Don't want more than my share, just want to get equal value. What do you think? - Is $2,900 for a 2001 X1, 17,000mi mostly stock(after market shifter/exhaust) in solid good shape fair?

As far as me body.... Things are going well. I'm up to walking a mile on a good day. My arms are still kinda shot. I lifted them up off the training table, while on my back, with out help for the first time today. This is where you lay down, arms at sides, palm down, and raise you arm straight up with your shoulder. Hurt's like a bitch, but PROGRESS!: )

Thanks for the tip Brokeneck, I'll have to check that out.

Forgot to say: The salvage value on it was put at $1,450. If I take their deal, I'd get $2,000.00 and the bike. $2,000.00 is what I owe the bank. Or 3,500. - The bike would be paid off, and I would walk away with about $1,500. And lose about a $1,000 worth of parts, gear, and various other expenses.

they should also pay you for your gear (helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, etc.). Looking at blue book for that bike, the trade in value is about 2900 and the retail value is about 4100.

they are always going to offer cheap, they want their bonus later. Dont take their flac. You have to negotiate and lay out what fair and what isnt. They dont know anything either. Hell, ask for money because you have to educate them.

Give them backup. Give them time so that they want to settle. It sounds like you have some time. You may not get it all but there's a point where they just want to get if off of their desk. I'm pretty sure insurance will not cover any gear.

Best of luck with your recovery!

What year is (was) your X1? Cost of upgrades?
Do your diligence, make your case, wait for the right moment...take your time, heal.
Keep a sharp eye on the classified section of BWB and craigslist, there are some gems out there and it's a buyers market.

Not sure if the cager was named at fault -- If you can go through his insurance do so -- especially with your injuries they know they face a possible huge lawsuit -- they should want to make you happy on the bike and any gear -- it's small dollars compared to what they might still face in future litigation and they should want to appear helpful. I've had gear paid for and bike damage settled more than fairly more than a couple of times by a cagers insurance co.
