Dunlop vs Pirelli Does any one have any thoughts other that Pirellis seem to be a little more expensive. | ||

WHICH Dunlops, WHICH Pirelli. There is NO answer to just brand preference. What type of riding? Mileage v. handling - all the usual questions. It's a constantly changing topic. | ||

I had stock Pirelli, nice on the highway..great infact..totally gone, totally at eleven thousand Kilometers..wicked, wire on the road. I think that is like six thousand miles..sucks..Then got the scorpion pirelli..sucked..totally bald at ten thou again..should changed at eight for sure..super thin tire, more sport bikeish..looks awesome new for off road..but did not realize how thin that boot is..totally shot, not even holding air at eleven thousand kilometers, four flats in about fifty miles..Now have brand new dunlops..will see, only two thousand kilometers or so..so, this is my third tire since march or april of this year. Hope that helps..might have got more, as this does not add up to my current twenty four thousand kilomters this summer..but anyway, you get the idea.. | ||

Yes the Pirelli's are the best , Buell changed them from Dunlop's for a reason . The Bike magazines confirmed that in their reviews on new Buells when they changed to those a couple of years ago . They were always bitching about the quirky handling of the XB's , and when they changed to the Pirelli's , all the bitching stopped . (Message edited by kdogshirow on September 09, 2009) | ||

Look into Bridgestone... I was looking into higher end (compared to OEM) Pirelli's but am going Bridgestone as they are so much cheaper. The BT-016 can be had for $200's a set if you shop around or normally $240ish... Pirelli's are a LOT more expensive. The BT-016 has 3 compounds in the rear and 2 in the front, if you are an aggressive street rider it will give you grip but not be terrible for wear. Also if you want grip but do commute a bit more or are less aggressive, the BT-021 is a sport touring tire with plenty of grip, I have used the Pilot Road 2's and they gripped fine even at a pretty fast pace but they lacked feel, which I heard the 21's have more of. I have also heard good things about the dual compound Road Smarts which I believe are Dunlop, no? But the OEM dunlops are terrible, from what all the Buell guys say. | ||

Seems to be we always get the same short list: Pirelli's per new OEM spec; Michelin Pilot Roads; Conti Road Attacks (some prefer sportier sport attacks or pilot powers... the variations are almost endless, as are the threads, posts, and opinions). The latter two are dual compound so they should last longer if you ride on straighter stuff than twisties. Everyone seems to concur that just about any other tire than the Dunlop works better for them. After that, you are into a can'o'worms of personal taste, riding habits, types of roads ridden, track use or not, wet weather riding or not, mileage expectations, cost, etc. | ||

I don't have all that much experience with lots of different tires but I've noticed that the general Pirelli profile suits the XB chassis quite well. There are other tires out there that work really good too so don't limit yourself. You can't really miss with the Pirelli for Aggressive and day to day street riding but tire technology has come so far that almost all the companies are putting out good stuff. Ya just gotta figure out which ones are best for the job. But given the choice of Pirelli or Dunlop I would choose Pirelli. The Dunlops that do work on the XB all seem to wear out pretty fast. (qualifiers) The ones that last a good long while all have a profile that isn't so great. i.e. standing up when trail braking. Disclaimer: This is from my own experience. I only speak for myself. Dunlop street tires are junk, go with one of the Diablo series tires depending on what kind of life vs grip you are looking for. Michelin and Bridgestone tires are also good. I personally have had the best results with Michelin tires regardless of the type of motorcycle i've owned over the last 9 years. Depending on your riding style, the Pilot Road 2 or the Pilot Power 2ct are great choices. | ||

I run Michelin Pilot Road...1700 miles so far. Happy with performance and best of all they are wearing like iron. I will buy them again. |
