I saw this post on the ULY section:

"I got to thinking that the reason my oil temps have creeped up over the miles and years was because the oil cooler fins needed cleaning. I removed the oil coolers air diverting plastic shroud which is as simple as removing two 1/4x20 socket head screws. First time I've done that. Then I tried spraying soapy water straight through with the spray tip up against the fins but it wouldn't come through the other side and certainly it should since air is meant to go through to cool the fins of their heat. I went to the car wash and and power washed the oil cooler completely. Road it home and tried hand spraying through again and it easily sprayed through. Don't know how long those fins have been clogged but I imagine it has been 2 or 3 years. Now I'll bet my oil temps revert back to what they were during the first two years of ownership. I'm not one to keep my bike spotless or anywhere near that but from now on I will keep the oil cooler clean of crud so it can do its job as intended. By the way, the oil cooler looked fine before the power washing, but internally the fins were completely clogged with dirt."

Since my ULY turned 28000 on the Dragon Trip I thought I'd clean my cooler. I removed the shroud and sprayed Carb cleaner through it in the direction opposite the air flow. It came through oily/dirty. I let it sit a couple of minutes and sprayed soapy (Wisk) water through it using a pump up garden sprayer. I let it sit again and sprayed clean water through it. I don't know how much better it will cool now but it sure is clean and I can see through it and water flows through it easily.

Damn Frank there you go talking about cleaning your bike again. If Eric Buell wanted them to be cleaned he would have built in little water jets all over the bike.

If you follow your maintenance sheet in the Buell repair manual, one line item is removing the oil cooler shroud and cleaning the fins every 5k....

My bike has been sold. One of my old neighbors' sons just left with it 30 minutes ago. He knows just how well I took care of it as he would sit in the garage and watch me doing maintenance on it regularly. I've known him since he was 8 and he's now nearly 20.

He'll take good care of it.

I still plan on stopping by on occasion for sure John. I am banking on MaryAnn's new business doing very well and getting one of those new Erik Buell Racing bikes in a year or two. I saved my Buell helmets and jackets with that in mind.

I hated like hell to let my bike go, but this young man was very interested and is probably one of the few, other than you guys, that fully realized just how well I took care of and maintained it.

Here is my new unit, original one, and new one installed. Installation was easy and as others have mentioned rolling resistance is reduced.

I haven't ridden it yet though.
