So I'm on my way back to Fallon, NV via Mountain Home, ID / Elko and I loose power and the oil light comes on. I take the closest off ramp, about 200 yards down, yes in the middle of nowhere. So I take off my helmet and the uly sounds like it's rattling bolts in a tin can. I shut it off and go to check the oil. I notice that the relocated crankcase breather is drenched in oil, and the cap/oil gauge is loose as hell. There is plenty of oil, in fact, it's runnng out of the damn tank! It wasn't like that when I did a walk around and fluids check before I left Boise. So I emmedietly go to the filter, take it off and "pop", sounds like I have negative vacuum. I already know I'll be rebuilding the engine, that much is certain. What I want to know so it doesn't happen again is why this happened after the bike had been running excellent with no changes all week, to include the 440 mile trip to Idaho. Could also use some links to a lot of buell engine parts, like a crank, rods, case... (Message edited by vwsinner on September 08, 2009) |

What exactly failed? Anyway, there is a whole XB12 engine for sale for $500 in the classifieds that needs some repairs, perhaps you can scavenge parts off that? |

Wow. How many miles on the engine? When I had mine apart w/55,000 miles on it, everything looked very good. I think the "ultimate" XB12X engine life is WELL beyond 100,000 miles. Lubrication failure? What exactly do you mean by "relocated crankcase breather"...? Anyway, mucho sympathy, amigo. Glad to hear you say rebuilding instead of, uh, um, replacing. Were there ANY symptoms leading up to this? --Doc |

Well, there were no symptoms leading to the failure. Not sure what went yet, have to take it down. It's still on Idaho and I had to work tonight on Fallon, NV. I pick it up next week. The crank case breather relocation to just forward of the swingarm from the heads. Engine has 18k miles and I changed the oil every 2500 religiously with royal purple synthetic or drag specialties synth. (Message edited by vwsinner on September 08, 2009) |

Sorry about this. I've lost an engine before and it isn't a good feeling. If you want to try and figure out why, call Pammy at cyclerama. She likes to talk about this stuff, and she knows a hell of a lot about diagnosing engine failures. |

Wow, sorry to hear this. I think the first thing I'd do is drop the oil pump and check out condition of the drive gear. These gears have been known to self-destruct on occasion, resulting in no oil pressure and sometimes taking out all the cam drive gears in the process. It almost sounds like somehow the pressure section of the pump stopped pumping while the scavenging section kept working. That would explain an overfull swing arm and maybe the vacuum at the filter. I just can't imagine how that could happen, unless the line from the pump to the filter got plugged. |

I would wonder if Buell Customer Service would be interested in hearing about your engine failure. Probably not, but I would make the call anyway. Maybe a silver lining hidden somewhere in this? Sorry to hear about your situation!! Keep us posted on your findings. |

Thanks everybody. I'm talking to several gear heads here on BW and it looks like it might have been the primary chain. Again I won't know till I crack it open next week after I go and pick it up in Idaho! |
