Neil,if you want to get to 100 RWH.,figure where you are at now, then figure 100$ per 1HP,until you get to 100RWH.That will get you really close to the actual cost. But when and if you get to 100 RWH,the cost per HP above 100 goes up dramatically. |

Update on my X1... I changed the plugs and it fired up although front cylinder didn't fire except at idle . I loaded it up Saturday and took it to the almighty Frankster. Upon Frank stepping out of the building to see possesed X1 I fired it up and it ran as advertized . I told Frank I would be back with witnesses next time. Due to the nail that just fell out of the rear tire Frank has to put a new tire on before he can put it through it's paces. I did look at an XB and really liked the option where you don't have to push it home!! More to come!! |

Actually Richie you sold it to me. If it's the piece I am thinking of, and unless you had 2 of them. Ok fellas I have a situation here. Who would like to take some time sometime soon to take me under thier wing and teach me carburetors 101? I have this '76 Honda CB550 I bought for next to nothing. My dad and I have had it running but it seems to only be running on 3 cylinders instead of 4. 1 and sometimes 2 of the keihin carbs are overflowing gas out of the overflows as well as right out of the carb bodies. The bike has 4 carbs. I know absolutley nothing about carburetors other then what I have read so far. I have been on another message board for honda SOHC/4's and the consensus there is simply to remove the carbs take them apart and clean the piss out of them since this bike sat for so long. Possibly the needles are gummed and/or the floats need re-adjusted. Then put them back together reinstall them and then synchronize them. I am sure I could probably get them off but I don't want to mess anything up and I would love to simply learn this stuff. I need to learn it I just don't want to learn it the hardway. I will be picking up a clymers manual on this bike so I will have that but I don't have the tools at all to sync the carbs.. I called a couple different shops and they want $180 plus to do this. I can't afford that and plus I want to learn. I thought someone here might have the sync tool ( mercury manometer carb balancing tool ) and the time to show me the ropes.. Any takers?? |

Fuscat... The carbs need to be rebuilt I would have no doubt. Not rocket surgery... and you should have no trouble getting the kits through about any Honda shop. I have tons of tools... but having two FI bikes and two with single carbs... I have yet had the need to get the sync device. I also have a $100.00 CB550 located... waiting for the owner to realize it is not going to get restored... and not looking forward to dragging an empty trailer to Iowa to pick it up... (the trip up is gonna cost more than the bike!) had that been at the time table I guessed... I woulda had already done exactly what you speak... and had the device. There are two types... the one you spoke of... and a newer type that is more precise... and a bit more expensive. I have been pondering over one of those... and lost the source I had in a pile of magazine & catalogs. I will help with the rebuild task... and address the sync when it gets to that... come see me this weekend. |

Wait just one minute... let's be accurate! I never touched his X1... (He kept slapping my hand when I reached out towards it, and distracting me with beer to stay away from it!) ...and I have one in pieces in my bike shop too!!! and it is a Honda!!!! (and technically that can't be laid on me... my 14 year old son took the Honda apart!) So... OH YEAH!!!! (there I told him!) |

Dennis, excellent. Name the day & time this weekend that works best for you.. And do you want me to load up the whole bike and bring it or? What all do I need to bring? I got about 5 or 6 cans of carb cleaner.. I havnt gotten the manual yet so I am not too keen on taking the carbs off yet. Also I probably won't have the rebuild kits for a couple weeks until next payday.. Alot of the stuff I have been reading on the SOHC/4 boards says that 9 times out of 10 cleaning is all that is needed and that the rebuild kits usually aren't. (the cheapest I have seen online is $17.99 each & 1 kit per Carb!) Richie, are you talking the other place in OP? Anyone else planning on going? Looks like it might rain.. |

Fuscat... If the carbs are leaking and puking gas... I am thinking no amount of spray carb cleaner with them on the bike will fix the problem. I am thinking if that is the case... the carbs are gonna have to come off. What we can do... is look and evaluate... figure what is coming from where... and see if something is loose... missing... cracked (dried out)fuel lines... or the such. I am thinking when they say cleaning... that means carbs off engine... disassembled... rebuilt. Having said that... you can bring the bike Saturday morning... and we can give it a good look... and figure if we need to wait on the book... kits... etc... or what ever. Call me Saturday morning... I should be up and around between 7:30 & 8 am. 935-5066 Did you check HUB cycle on 24 hwy for the Clymer book??? We should be able to remove the carbs if wanted without the book... but the book will be needed for rebuild and rough settings on reassembly. I looked into a Carbtune II (did a little research on the internet)... a hundred bucks and a week to get... I am considering the purchase... we can talk Saturday... call me tonight or in the morning. |

Fuscat, when you figure out why yours is overflooding with fuel, you all can help me with mine. I got that Yamaha 1100XS that just wont stop leaking until the air box fills up, what a pain!! Also, I rebuilt my makunis, and if yours are the same, I have 4-extra fresh rebuild kits collecting dust, your more than welcome to use them! Rebuilding them is really easy, just don't take the carbs off the main rail and you wont have to worry to much about syncro! |

Hey KC Mob, I just wanted to drop you fellas a line, I just purchased my first street bike, XB9SL and am in need of some riding partners, and technical advisors. I come from a motorcross background but figured why limit myself to the dirt. Not to mention I couldn't pass up a great deal on my XB. Anyway, I already have logged around 200 miles on it and love it. Anyway take care and I hope to hear from the MOB soon. |
