OK, this isn't really personal, it's business. :P (Although I am personally on all the sites too. Wanna be my friend? ) We (that's, Liberty Buell) are currently on MySpace and Facebook. Us as Liberty Harley are also on Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. Us as our other dealership are on BikerOrNot also. We're trying to find out where everyone is, from a Marketing perspective. People seem to change their email addy's faster than their underwear, and we get a lot of bounces. With the social networking sites, you can usually be reasonably sure the messages get through. Anyone have any opinions about businesses they may be fans of? What's too much contact, what's too little? Personally, I think some people get a little crazy with the tweets, and if my page gets filled up, I tend to un-follow them. What do you guys think? ->ChelleM |

I MySpace it, not as much as I used to though. Rarely hit FB anymore, it's just the girls that were too stuck up to talk in high school that now want to be my friend (WTF) Twitter to me seems to be overboard. I don't really care what you're doing! As far as from a business. A bulletin or two is OK, but don't go nuts. Maybe like a weekly mailer about anything going on at the shop. If something special is coming up maybe a few notifications of it, and one the day before and the day of. You've got it though, think of it as if you were a "fan" of it yourself. Don't go nuts, just keep us informed. |

I prefer email notices. I get one from gearXS.com http://www.gearxs.com/ and several others on a daily basis. I do email and news groups, that is enough. |

I'm a fan on FB, personally I think that the amount of posting you do now is great. I feel like I'm in the loop, but not overwhelmed by it. |

I'm a big fan of your customer service, just sent Chris a note today. I don't belong to any social services but I do get an e-mail from you from time to time. That's plenty for me. |

I'm on facebook, also on myspace but I don't really use it anymore. I tend to not "fan" businesses all that much because I don't want to be pounded my announcements. If you put out one or two posts a month, that would be good. More than that and I'd dump you. |

MySpace and Facebook under my name. I use Facebook the most because of the number of friends and family already on there. Great tool for communication, just stay away from all the apps. I am a fan of several bike related groups, bike related businesses and musicians but only the ones I know personally or really like. |

Hey - thanks for all the fan-ups! My stats are gonna look pretty crazy tomorrow! Personally, I prefer Facebook to myspace. You can't decorate FB like MySpace, but it does load a little faster. It's also a bit easier to send updates and quickie messages to fans on FB than MySpace. Was thinking of promotions, ya know, giveaways for fans, name-from-a-hat type of things too. I got the technology down, just trying to figure out the best way to leverage it. Thanks for all your responses! ->ChelleM |

Too many social sites. Spreads things too thin. I got Faceplant and Titter and a couple professional networking sites and it's just too much crap. Scaling back for the same reason I've ditched the TV a decade ago. Too much else going on. |

Don't like or use them and I find anything with talk-back option is a bad way to retail - if you aren't the retailer. Too may haters out there. |

Boy - a few more fans and we'll get the honor of a vanity URL from Facebook! Someday, I dream of being www.facebook.com/libertybuell. But not yet - that link wont' work - FB won't give you your own link until you have 100 fans. Hopefully the other liberty doesn't get it first!!! |

Already a fan How many are you up to? I belong to myspace and facebook. I prefer myspace because it's good to find bands/music and people with common interests, though I don't check it any where near as much as I used to, maybe once a week now. I subscribe to quite a few myspace blogs though, and check them every week or so. I use facebook for silly games and keeping in touch with friends, and I'm a fan of a few bands and companies. I check facebook most days. I check my email at least once a day. Chellem - For me facebook is good for event info, but if my friends are doing lots of updates, stuff can disappear down off the homepage pretty quickly and I miss it. If I see lots of updates from one page (several a day) which don't really say anything new, I tend to block it. I prefer to be emailed info on sales and new products, no chance I'll miss it. Once a week is good. |

Go on Facebook about 2 X per 3 days - Mostly to see what my university has been up to (some neat stuff). "Friends" w/ a couple of retail outlets. The only one that is geographically near me fills my in-box w/ crap. If I did not feel sorry for anybody trying to make a living in Buffalo would de-friend them. Don't see the point of "Twitter". Why should I use up my minutes to find out what somebody is up to? |

Every time I've put a product I like or have been promoting on a news group someone invariably pipes up with an alternative, cheaper, better product, that saves the whales at the same time. Or they have had their own horror story with the product which they relish the opportunity to tell in detail. If you can control the comments it works better I guess |

On MySpace you can control the comments. On Facebook, diligence is the only real option. You can either turn OFF all comments, or open the floodgates. That is a risk. People have to become fans to comment (or to see the comments I think) on FB. If someone comes up with a Buell sweatshirt that can save the whales - I sure hope they post it! That'd be awesome. :P JK!!! Thanks again for all your comments. And all your fan-ups. Yay! ->ChelleM |

I have accounts on both myspace and facebook, but only use FB because it strikes me as being a more secure and professional site. That being said, I think that marketing through these type of web communities could introduce a lot of potential customers to a business. I've placed orders with Beartooth Buell (BWB Sponsor) by using facebook messages. With my work schedule, placing an order during normal business hours is inconvenient so I find it easier to shoot a message via FB at 3am, and be done. |

Beartooth is a good bunch of guys. REALLY nice website too. Didn't know they were a BadWeb sponsor too! (They always steal my ideas! :P) PK are you out there somewhere? So much beautiful riding. Think I'll try to keep it to one or two quick updates a day (at most) on FB, and only if I have something to say. Does anyone ever read the "updates" from pages? I have to admit, I get a lot and I barely skim through them. I need to stop fanning TV shows - they're nuts! I've been tweeting used bikes we have in stock, one a day - kinda a Used Bike of the Day sort of thing. Think that's too obnoxious? ->ChelleM |

Anyone have any opinions about businesses they may be fans of? What's too much contact, what's too little? I think a once a week email is fine. I check email frequently, but I'm not on MS or FB everyday. Chick's HD in ALBQ used to do a weekly "One Item Only" sale, and the promise of a smokin' deal always got me to read it. I'm currently on a email list for a Japanese company I bought a t-shrit from ages ago. It's run by an American, and his email updates are well written and have little stories about life in Japan as seen thru the eyes of gaijin. I may not want to buy his Green Tea flavored Kit-Kat bars, but I never skip those emails. |
