Me and my friend played hookie from work and deceided to go rip a little back country road we found on google the night before, every thing was going great until i exited the corner and was going up a hill when i noticed the vavles started tapping, i looked down and the oil light was on. I shifted into neutral and there just happend to be a gas station, i cut it off and coasted in, checked oil- only half quart low, put half back in- light still on vavles still tapping! Had to wait 2 hours for another friend to come get me (I was in between BFE and "you got a purdy mouth") Any ideas on what the hell happened??? |

If you lost oil pressure, sounds like either the oil pump or the oil pump drive gear went. I say take it in to the dealership. Not too mechanically inclined myself! |

Some trouble shooting things to try: Unplug the wire to the oil pressure switch, and confirm the light goes out w/the ignition on. That way you know that there is not a short in the warning light circuit. Take the spark plugs out, and turn the engine over w/the oil pressure switch removed. Look for oil flow. If none, you most likely have an oil pump issue or an oiling system blockage. If you have access to one, an oil pressure gauge can be plumbed in at the oil pressure switch location. Crank the engine over for 10 sec or so, w/the plugs out, and see what reading you get. The factory service manual is essential here. Hope this helps, Dave |

Good for you for parking it until you understood the problem... I'd be dropping the oil pump and inspecting it, and looking up at the pinion gear (which you can see up through the hole the oil pump used to occupy). Rotate the crank a few times to make sure you see all sides of that gear... Easy check, at worst it just costs you an oil pump gasket. |

+1 Reepicheep DO NOT TURN THE ENGINE OVER until you pull the filter off, cut it open and also look at the oil pump drive gear. Any damage you may have saved by shutting it down will be lost if you turn it over again with the oil pump gear drive shot. The oil pump drive gear is a known issue on the earlier models and as such models from 06 0n had the optional gear drive installed. It can be purchased from Buell and is in their catalogue. |

Hell Yeah!!!!!!! Spent all day today getting it put back together had to rotate the motor and everything, but it beats paying $80/hr at the shop any day. The bike is running great but I'm going to go have the TPS reset this weekend anyway. Thanks for the help guys I'll post some pics when i get a chance. |

Wow! Few people crunch that part and have a motor that doesn't require a boatload of work. Good job! |
