Yet another post on Buell's new advertising campaign. "Sitting is Not a Sport." Very strange ad campaign. I bought my Buells PRECISELY because they were more comfortable for STREET riding than anything else from the competition. If the bike were so uncomfortable that I'd have to keep moving around on it, it would've stayed on the showroom floor. So the reason that I bought a Buell is because I wanted a sporting STREET bike; I could care less about having the latest high-maintenance track weapon. It's nice that I CAN put it through it's paces on the track, but the bike spends more than 99% of its time on public roads and a lot of those are heavily trafficked. Not everyone in the country lives next door to the Tail of the Dragon or the Blue Ridge Parkway. So I have to wonder where Buell is going with this new campaign of theirs. |

I'm kinda viewing it as an anti-HD campaign, since with HD, sitting IS a sport. Don't take it so personal |

"I'm kinda viewing it as an anti-HD campaign, since with HD, sitting IS a sport." Not with my HD. |

Sorry Jamiec, but the new campaign isn't aimed at you and your intent, its aimed more at the young Japanese bike riders. Its working, and its working great, and is part of the reason I now own a Lobster. I got bored of sitting on my Uly, now I hang off the side of my Lobster on my commute to work. |

I think it's aimed toward the UFC type of crowd...That's how I'm seeing the attitude of the campaign. I like it. It's definitely not aimed at the "older" crowd. But Buell is probably looking at it like this. You know the bike works, and you know how comfy it is. So why do you need the marketing campaign to sell you on your next bike? |

"Not with my HD" Nor mine. While we all love to lampoon the chaps-wearing, bandana swathed, middle-aged biker and wannabe-biker, fact is that there is a significant percentage of H-D riders that put serious miles on their bikes and are more than modestly skilled pilots. They simply have a different definition of motorcycling than the predominately sport-bike crowd here. Not better, not worse, just different. |

An ad campaign targeted toward the "skilled HD rider" would miss 90% of the sport rider market. The company isn't leaving anyone behind. They are simply working from the base they have and launching into a new market segment. No one is getting kicked out of the boat. (now if you have your panties in a bunch and jump out voluntarily......) |

I agree completely. The point merely is to avoid considering Buell advertising/marketing in an H-D context. |

I really dont care for a track bike, I really dont care for a 'stat sheet' bike, and I dont give two shiats about who is running and winning on the track. It has nothing to do with my ride, my commute, or my choice in bikes. I bought the Buell precisely because it was designed for the real world and meant to be enjoyed by the rider. the Dude my bike will do 200 mph ... meh; and when they catch you, you will loose your license, your bike, and most likely do some jail time. running a bike only around the track is like training for a marathon only on the treadmill. Yeah you learn some things, yeah you get in shape, but you never go anywhere! The world is not a closed course professional rider event; it a big untamed, unpaved, uncharted ride that needs no more than tanks of gas and a direct to roam. Keep your sport bikes, I will keep my sledgehammer for getting the job done. 'Dont Cube MY Nine' |

Good for you City... You get motorcycling... The only thing I would suggest is that you at least experience a track and Colorado and Tennessee and Nebraska or Kansas at some point in your journey. There are wonderful ways to enjoy a motorcycle any and every way you turn and the speed of that turn has little to do with it... or does it??? I guess that depends on which turn... After all "some turns were made for acceleration"! Enjoy your ride where ever it leads you. T |

Did you mean to include Nebraska? The only thing I would like about riding in Nebraska is a fairly high speed limit. But anyone can go fairly fast in a straight line. |

Saw my first tornado in Nebraska back in 1991 (I was heading to Sturgis). Laid down on the tank and just opened the throttle to the stop. That's the first, last, and only time I hit my "highest speed ever." |

Depends on WHERE you're at in Nebraska. The Pine Ridge area around Chadron & Crawford ain't too bad. Just watch out for deer, tornados, hail storms, thunder storms, locusts, etc., etc. |

Hasn't "Jumping the Shark" jumped the shark itself? It is from a TV show last produced in the previous Millennium.

If the bike were so uncomfortable that I'd have to keep moving around on it, it would've stayed on the showroom floor. If that's what you take away from the ad, then you missed the point. The point isn't that a Buell is so uncomfortable that you have to move around the seat - the point is the Buell is so good at being a sportbike that you should really use it to it's fullest, wherever you ride - which would require in most cases moving around the seat. But I think you already knew that. The point is you bought the Buell because it's, well, a Buell. You already have a K1200LT - a bike perfectly at home with you just sitting in the seat. Not that you can't make one boogie, but that's not what it was designed to do. But you bought the Buell becuase you wanted something different from a motorcycle that the Bimmer couldn't give you - If it could have, your profile pic would be you on the track with the LT and not the 1125. No, you don't have to hang off the 1125 or any other Buell to enjoy it - but, 99 times out of 100, you decided on the Buell because it's a bike that is capable and at home being ridden in such a manner, and that intrinsicly means it has other characteristics you desired in your purchase. The fact that they're also the most comfortable sport bikes out is icing on the cake. I agree with Fat - no one is being left out or pushed aside - they're merely saying the same thing they've always said, just with a bit more attitude. (Message edited by xl1200r on August 18, 2009) |

Unfortunately, Slick, most of the sportbike buyers DO care about all the thing you find irrelevant. Once they've been attracted to the sportbike side, they will learn about all the "real world" benefits you describe and stay model after model. With few exceptions, the existing marketing strategy ain't working. |

"No one is getting kicked out of the boat." But the P3 Cube is now the anchor... LOL What City said- being a Buell rider means understanding the sticker that says "if I had to explain you wouldn't understand" as far as the ricers are concerned. What Ft said too- as a salesman IT'S HIS JOB to explain so that the noob ricer prospect WILL understand. (Until the 1125R Loki platform was launched, spec sheet racers couldn't understand the appeal of the early tubers or the XB's. Dipshits can't see past the numbers.) That's rarely an easy task, but it's a lot of fun watching someone new to the brand get turned on to Buell. Tom- I hope you put in your time off request to HR, hopefully you and Jeremy can roll to Suches in October. BTW- Jeremy, didja get a new ride? Hope so. If anyone's interested, I'm selling an '82 R65. Kewl bike. Selling it will finance the fixing of the XB9SX and some other junk. |

After moving to Oklahoma, I miss the riding areas in Nebraska. Alright, so the best ones were just across the border into IA, but still.. |

The ad campaign doesn't bother me. Neither the Book nor the "hanging off" apply to me. I ride a Blast. I just ride the thing the way I want to. |
