I have always had cheap helmets and am looking to get a good one. I want to know what makes for a good helmet. Materials? Snell approved? Weight? Air flow. Can those who know more about it fill me in on what to look for.

Fit first and foremost. A properly fitted cheap helmet will protect you better than a poorly fitted expensive one. After that, it all depends on what you want. If you ride in hot weather you'll want venting. If you ride long distances you'll want something light.

About the ratings, personally I want the safest helmet I can get so I buy Snell rated helmets. To be specific, I buy Shoei helmets. In fact, I just got an x-11 because it fits the shape of my head, vents like I'm barely wearing anything, is extremely light, and is one of the helmets/brands trusted by professionals to protect them.

+1 on fit. I have Joe Rocket Carbon Fiber RKT 101 because it is superlight, has a lot of venting, just looks so dang cool : D.

+2 on the fit.

A loose fitting helmet is bad.
A snug helmet is good.

Head shape is very important.

I recommend going to a shop and trying on the lids you fancy. Don't just slip it on then off. Keep it on for at least ten minutes to really get an idea of how it feels.

There are good helmets out there that don't cost an arm and a leg.
If your head is more of a round shape, Scorpion makes a good helmet in the $200 range.

After years of buying HJC helmets and not having any issues with the exception of them being a bit loud I purchased a Shoei TZR on closeout. Wow. For 200.00 I got the best lid I have ever had. Lighter, better ventilation, love the shield mechanism and the inside is a really nice.

I will not be going back to HJC.

http://www.webbikeworld.com/...Check out this web site they review helmets and other motorcycle stuff good luck..About four years back motorcyclist did a review on helmets and found that some helmets with just DOT ratings did better than some snell approved helmets. I own a shoei X-11 and KBC tarmac and the only difference is the noise level the X-11 has more vents so it's more noisier than the KBC either way I still wear ear plugs.
