will it fit? I have a lead on one. Not sure what length my shock is right now and I am at work. Am I right in figuring that it would work, just might have to use a different mount?

The shock I have the lead on is P/N-K0431.M. Now the more I think about it is this a safe shock to use?

Judging from the pic above, I just bought the 01-02 showa. I have a 00 but don't see the one that is on my bike in the pics above. The one currently on my bike has collars at the end, making it kinda "football" shaped. Am I correct in figuring that even if it is different lengths I can change the mount? If so where do I find the mount? What is odd by the pics above is that the shock I bought was listed as P/N-K0431.M and said it was for a 95-96 S2/S2T 99-00 S3/S3T but it really looks like the 01-02 from the pic above.

Any way to tell the length of mine currently installed on the bike? If so, how do I measure the length of the one I just bought, other than the pic above?

Look at the front arm of the shock and compare it to the picture. If the front arm looks like the 16.5" Showa, it's a 16.5". If not, it's a 14.7".

yeah, it appears to be the 14.7. Hard to tell though because all I have is a pic and it's still in the wrapper. I tried to cut/paste the pic but no luck on that. Can someone tell me from the P/N? And can someone tell me about/if there is a relocation kit in case it is a different length. I can probably cut and paste the pic into an email if that would help at all.

Can't pm, but can send it in a regular email. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hummm, I have the second shock in the picture. The 16.5 showa. Should I be riding in fear??? Rather, how does this one like to fail. Not buy dropping the bike on the ground, I hope. A future leaker is one thing, a swingarm and bike killer I cant.

I believe if yours has collars it's a 16.5 eye to eye. You'll need a new bracket to mount the 14.7 eye to eye on your bike. Check the box it came in. The recall shocks were a kit with the correct bracket and hardware with the shock to replace the 16.5 with the 14.7 shock.

So all the 14.7" shocks for the 2001-2002 models are the same Showa item? What about the M2L models?

thank you, I really hope this works. Mine is starting to leak a little and I found this one on ebay at a hd dealer near me for only $113. I know it isn't as good as the works or penske but if I can get a few years out of it I will be happy

The "SRP" is exactly what I have on the bike now. From what I can tell from the ebay pic the one I bought is the new showa. Like I said, I can email the pic to someone if they think they can confirm it, or go off the part number I have above. The best I can figure is maybe the selling dealer had a few of these for the recall and never installed them. There are still a couple on there. Hopefully when I get it the new mounting hardware is with it. What sucks is if they were recalling the SRP then I should have gotten this done for free but now I paid a $113 for the shock alone!! I did have someone on this sight run my VIN awhile back though and they said there were no outstanding recalls done to my bike.

If you got it from the dealer in Ohio you probably don't have the mounting hardware. I snagged on from the dealer in Ohio and there was no mounting hardware in the box. I had one earlier that had hardware with it. Here's what I got.

The one before had mounting hardware in that empty slot in the box.

Ok, found out that the bracket is $70!! I don't get this. I mean was the SRP under recall? If so why do I have to pay for the parts that should be covered under a recall?

Don't forget the bolt AA0646.1CZ(2) and washer BA0613.2Z(2) that you'll need. Those P/N are from a 2002 parts book, so they might be superseded now.

Bhillberg:

Well, you might check in with a Buell dealer, but I would have to imagine the factory isn't doing the warranty deal on the older bikes. Can you imagine a third owner coming into the shop and asking for a 'new' rear shock when his bike has say 35,000 miles on it? That's the downside of doing your own service/repairs. The dealer never acknowledges the recall stuff until your bike is in the shop.

I have a salvaged 2000 Blast with 10K miles on it and has been through 4-5 beginning rider/owners. Bike never went into the shop since each owner would put a couple thousand miles on the bike and then sell it. I found the original shipping clip on the primary adjuster bolt when I bought it!

Safe ride,

I understand that they wouldn't do the warranty. However a recall is NOT a warranty. A safety recall is NOT a warranty. I know that these shocks have been recalled before and I was under the understanding that they simply ran out of supplies. However, there are obviously some floating around out there. I checked my bike with a member on here before and they said that there was not a recall on my specific bike. But I do have the SRP shock on there. Now, unless the previous owner put this shock on himself, or they are figuring that the SRP fixed it then it should be taken care of. I understand that I have already took the bait on the shock off ebay. I just don't see how they can be charging for the bracket, and mounting hardware. I mean if it was part of a recall they should be doing the work for free too.

IIRC the problem with the shock was them breaking at rear near the eye under harsh conditions. There were relatively few affected, and they put out the conical reenforcement and strap on just in case. Even though your bike was probably not affected. Someone can correct me if i'm wrong. Searching in the old school section will yield answers to many of your questions.

Shocks go bad and need a rebuild after a while, that's to be expected. I'd say nine or ten years isn't bad for the life of a shock. You can find the brackets on ebay for 30-40 bucks. Would be a good time to upgrade the exhaust hanger if your bike doesn't have it already.

Yeah, I am satisfied for the life span of mine. I was just hoping that the bracket would be included and wondered how they could charge so much for something that was supposed to be replaced. If it is true that the reinforcement straps were considered a correction then that makes sense. I will have to learn how to scour ebay better for the brackets I guess

Swapping out the shock is a snap compared to some of the other things you might have to deal with. Mine lasted 43,000 miles. I got my replacement off Ebay and another one for when that one gives itself up.

Bhillberg:

I'm just guessing, but the eBay seller might have purposely taken out the mount so they could sell it separately. Some folks probably only needed the shock and so the mount wasn't always needed, so the seller was able to sell that part alone. I think there might be a mount on eBay right now. I was going to get a Works shock for my 2002 M2L, but after reading your thread I opted for a used (5,600 miles) 2002 shock which should hold me over until I save up for the Works unit.

Safe ride,

Bhillberg, I'm wondering if i should't be asking for your old SRP. Since my S3T has that shock, it can't hurt to add it to mine... unless you are intending to rebuild your old shock?

Dpg- I asked the seller (a HD dealer on my way to work) if they had the mount. They said no. I asked if they could get it (figuring the same as you) and they said I would have to get them the P/N since they are not a Buell dealer. I really don't know if they have it or not. I am going to stop by and pick it up this week though and I will see if they can help.

Drhacknstine- yeah, I doubt I will rebuild it but it might take me awhile to get around to actually replacing it. It is only leaking a bit right now and I really don't have a place to work on it.
