I have a XB9 in the garage and we are getting ready to wrap it. I have some questions since I have never done this before. If the is a link I am sorry but I did not do a search. The wrap is made Accel. Questions: Does it need to be wet while applying? Which end to I start at, the exhaust or the head end? TIA Frank | ||

When i did my xb9s I cut what I thought I would need for each pipe...approx 20-25ft i think. I then dipped the entire roll in water as it feels to grab and get a tighter pull when wet and some said it will tighten up once it dries, which it appeared to do. I started at the top, did a couple wraps then clamped it, I used small radiator clamps to hold mine on and had no problems. I tried to use steel zip ties but they had too much give once I cinched them. I did about a half overlap of the previous wrap the whole way down to where the pipes meet. It is much easier to have someone with you to help pull and be a second eye if something is off before you get too far. When I got to the 2 pipes I wrapped around twice and clamped and then wrapped over the clamp so nothing was visible.Also make sure you have a mask, gloves, pants and a long sleeve shirt as glass dust will be all over the place, itch itch. | ||

Zsb86, thanks for the info. Looks like J2Blue did not get enough. He only has 2 inch wide in a 25 foot roll. Frank | ||

Yeah he may run into problems with that. I wrapped mine with a decent overlap and did not have much left after doing the right header, left header, then the double pipe. I had 50 foot 2 inch and had less than 10 feet sitting around when it was all done. | ||

Zac, thanks for the advice. I got it wrapped with only 25 feet and none to spare. I tried to keep a half overlap on it. I'll see how much it shrinks after it dries! Thanks J2 | ||

J2blue, thats pretty impressive! but then again i probably overlapped mine about 3/4 and did a few extra loops around the top and the bottom of each section to ensure nothing would slip or show. Now turn it on and watch her stink and smoke! I took mine out for a ride and the person next to me at the light thought my bike was on fire LOL. | ||

 Jody got it done with what he had. I am disappointed that I did not have a blot that would work with his rear brake caliper but he installed his new mirrors, timing cover and header wrap. We went to the local HD Buell dealership and they did not have the bolt but I knew that. It was worth a shot. When Jody arrive at the shop I said I never installed wraps so I will watch and of course Jody said he had not done it either so we went to the BadWeb. Thanks Zsb86, we discussed some ways to do it but we did just what you said, water and start from the heads down. Frank | ||

Looks pretty good from the pics...Everything workout ok? And what did you use to hold the wrap at the top and bottom? steel zips? | ||

Yeah, the wrap included 4 stainless steel zip ties. I only used three of them... so far. I ran the engine for a while and burned off some of the "smoke". I am going to see if it shrinks or loosens over the next week and if I need to use another few zip ties I will. The guy who wrapped the header before me made use of wire wrap, which isn't really that bad. I want to find that high temp silicone coating that Chris posted a link to above. A guy at a local rice shop mentioned to me that the silicone coating helps protect the wrap and keep it looking good longer. That whole kit looks like a better combo than the one I got, but I'll make do. | ||

Yeah I did it the old school way with just white wrap and high temp black paint. It fades rather quickly, probably 3 weeks and it is showing 50% white.I just simply taped the area off and painted it again once it got bad, kind of a pain but oh well. The black wrap might be better and after hearing about the silicone spray, it sounds like the way to go. | ||

I've been thinking about wrapping mine. Does it help keep the right side of the frame a little cooler? | ||

Yes, it does keep the right side cooler. But it is difficult to get the wrap all the way up the rear cylinder head where it disappears behind the frame. I'm not sure if it helps lower the temp on the inside of the frame near the rear exhaust port. Perhaps more important is how much it does, or doesn't, lower the temperature of the fuel in the frame. Maybe someone else knows. | ||

With 30' of 2" wrap, overlapping about 2/3, I had more than enough. I just unwound the whole roll into a bucket of water. It has lasted through 2 yrs of all kinds of weather. I touched it up once early this season with DEI high-temp silicone. It could probably use another coat, but other than that, it's in great shape. It has definitely kept my right leg and seat cooler.
