Recently purchased a "new" '08 Uly XT and have enjoyed the hell out of riding it - - so far 2,000 miles in the first 5 weeks...

Anyway on to the topic - - noticed before my 1K service that one of the nylon lid stays (cables that keep the case lid from opening too far) broke when I opened one of the side cases. I mentioned it when I dropped off the bike for the service, not really sure if it would covered. To my surprise, they ordered the part without question.

Got a call to swing by and drop off the case for a day so a tech could replace the stay. Before I could leave they call me over and mentioned that they accidentally ordered the wrong part. So we looked at the exploded parts diagram - - Guess what? No individual part for the cord that holds the lid to the case. . . So I figured I'd rig up something with nylon cord, zip tie, or some other device, really, no big deal.

But wait, there's more. . . So the guy at the service counter looks up at me and states: "Well, we'll just order you another case..."

I almost fell over!

So for what its worth, Destination Harley-Davidson in Tacoma Washington has GREAT Customer Service!!!

Hope they'll be this understanding on some of the other well documented Uly idiosyncrasies...

A similar story;

I broke the same stays on the left side and one of the latches for the elastic bands ont the right. Shumate Motosports in Kennewick got me brand new bags. The bad part is that while Buell doesn't offer these parts, they are available and are not expensive. Seems like a hell of a waste of money to replace the whole bag when a $5 option is out there. I hate to see Buell loose money when they don't have to but maybe there is some value in R and D that I'm not taking into consideration.

You can buy the straps from European Motorsports. I am glad the dealer took care of you...but I too hate to see them wasting Buell's money.

...or make better ones from thin stainless cable and crimps:

Journey Deckelhalter fix

The original plastic ones will break again if you ride off with a loaded side case unlatched, or let a 30-pack fall out into a lid, DAMHIK...

Boy, that looks better than my field engineered nylon line straps. do you use the original fastners, studs, rivets, or whatever the hell those things are, or did you replace those too?

I used the original rivets/washers, the stainless cable is flexy enough to slip around the washer and stays put. I'll replace the rivets with threaded fasteners someday, maybe.

Those plastic ends from the original Deckelhalters are a bitch to cut away from the rivets though...

I agree and was starting to tell them not to bother with it, then remembered that case was pretty scratched up when I bought the bike - - a year's worth of people throwing a leg over the bike without clearing the bags, I guess. I'll be off-road soon enough and I'm sure the bags will soon like like crap, but I don't mind the scratches, nicks, and dings if I'm the one who puts them there...

Xbimmer - That will definitely be my next fix when/if they fail again.
