So i got my hands on a used buell race pipe. I put a couple of fingers up into the outlets and it has Copious amounts of black carbon even through to the ends of the outlets. I cant imagine what the innerds are coated with. So. Does anyone have ideas on how to clean up the insides. I dont want to crack it open, but I would like to improve the flow. Thanks, Alex |

A big plug of steel wool. Run it back and forth like cleaning a gun barrel. Wear breathing protection. If it had that much crap in it, that engine wasn't running very well...! Mike |

i cant imagine anything short of a blockage would be a problem.bolt it on and go. |

Wouldn't think it would impede flow but if your worried just shoot some gasoline or carb cleaner up there! Maybe follow with compressed air. |

I read on the internet one can burn it away with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. I seem to remember it goes like this: Pre-heat & start a red glowing ring of carbon at one open end of pipe; introduce extra oxygen; and (reportedly) carbon deposits will burn away in rush and pipe's empty. Lots of smoke. Pipe will get hot. |

I'd be worried about melting or warping the muffler that way. |

I just tried to clean up a two stroke exhaust that had been badly neglected... Filling it with oven cleaner and letting it soak over a weekend did OK. Big thick 1/4 inch thick chunks of carbon came out, but lots was still in there. A propane torch after that did much better... burned it up and smoked it out, but only where the propane could reach. But I could get it to the choke points (input and output of the header and exhaust can). So I could clean the choke points pretty well. That's a cool idea with "ignite and feed oxygen" approach... I may try that just for fun... the torch is just sitting there and the can is off the bike. All that being said, unless it is really thick, I doubt it's hurting any performance. The lengths and shapes of the exhaust are what really determines performance, not so much just diameter. And in many cases, you want to *narrow* the diameter of an exhaust port to improve performance (as smaller diameter increases velocity). (I'm not saying fill your pipes with carbon to go faster... just saying that unless you converted your Buell into a two stroke... I suspect you couldn't foul the exhaust badly enough to loose any measurable amount of performance)... |

Soak in a vat of vinegar for 4 days. If you use apple cider vinegar it'll smell like apple pie when you ride. j/k |
