Can anyone tell me how you remove the stock belt guards from an xb? I'v seen lots of pics with them removed and the look much better. I tried once so far, removed all the screws, but it seemed like the outside guard was still caught up on something. Plus after looking things over I thought the inner guard would only come off with the rear tire off. Anyone who has removed the guards on there xb, let me know how you did it. Just for looks, thats all. Thanks! | ||

SOrry if I am not a help but I just looked in the Manual, and it looks like there 3 screws per but this is for the 04' models so I am not sure how they differ from the earlier ones and it did mention loosening the belt to remove the lower.. | ||

You likely missed a screw or two. If you remove the wheel it will make it obvious where the screws are. | ||

There are a lot of screws holding it on! First time I did it I had the same problem and kept looking and finding even more screws to take out. Once you have them ALL out it comes right off. Ride to the edge! Dave Iowa HD/Buell (Buell Cycle Center) | ||

i used the T-27 torx driver in the tool kit. a couple screws are difficult to reach, but it can be done with the wheel in place. i only removed the rear upper goiter. looks much better. i dont feel totally exposed. that portion of the belt is LEAVING the pulley at that point, so i dont really see a big threat from debris infiltration there. | ||

i was concerned about removing the one bolt that goes through the guard into the swingarm and looks like it holds the swingarm together. afraid cause everything is so lock-tighted all to hell that it may snap. when i started to work on my reverse shift kit, the pinch bolt snapped right off of the shifter lever pivot at the tranny shift shaft. any issues with that particular bolt from experience? | ||

Yes, That bolt is tight. It is a pretty big diameter bolt. I used a allen head socket on a 1/2 inch drive rachet to break it loose. | ||

Do any of you know if the 04 belts guards fit on the 03s? Do they bolt right up to existing holes? I'm thinking of buying the polished lower guard but I have the 03 Lightning and they come stock on the 04s. If anyone knows for sure, then please tell!  edited by buellny on March 14, 2004 | ||

Been thinking of removing mine for ages. Had a go but failed to get the f'ing thing off!! So tried to put the bolts back, and fecked up one of the bolts. Might read the manual next time. | ||

I just noticed one of the screws holding my belt guard has fallen out! A buddy of mine on a 9r had the same screw disappear. Maybe if we just continue to ride hard enough, the damn thing will unsrew itself! | ||

Buellny...yes the 04 belt guards will bolt into the same holes as the 03's do...BUT, the fitting is less than ideal. I put the 04's on my 03 9S and it is fairly obvious they were meant to fit around a bigger rear pulley! Also, the inside portion of the lower guard almost touches the belt...it's so close, I was afraid the belt could snag up on it, so I removed them. I think to be safe, you would have to change the pulleys, etc. to effectively use the 04 guards. | ||

Yeah, I don't think it's worth the $300+ to do it. I'll just take the belt guard off and take my chances. I'll try and keep the Buell on paved roads and off of the motocross trails  ....you know...to lessen the chances of getting rocks into the belt. | ||

Just hope you never have it snap and come up and nail your foot or leg and those guards would all of a sudden look good again.I've seen them snap and I wouldn't want to be in its way. | ||

Yeah, if the belt where to snap and come up and wrap around my neck and pull me off the bike with three, no four, semi-trucks behind me, I'm sure just at that moment I'll be saying "damn! You have really no idea idea how much force is in back of those belts do you.Hey its your leg.I seen one snap and it flew by me about a two feet from my head while I was on my bike behind another club member.I'll tell ya I'm glad I wasn't in the way because it would of done some serious damage to my face not to mention taking me off my bike.I'm glad though that you have a sense of humor about it though.Boy I wish I would of worn my helmet today because if I did my brains would still be intact.Hindsight is 20/20. | ||

With the belt behind the trans pulley cover & going thru the swingarm I would say the chance of it hitting the person operating the bike is less than your odds of winning Powerball. PS..I would much rather be hit by the belt coming off a bike than blown tire chunks from a semi truck. Have had that happen & it sucks. | ||

Sorry about that Dyna but it happened to me.And it blew off M2guy's bike in the parking lot at Ukes when Tom was doing a burnout.The whole club witnessed it.It flew back behind his bike a good 10-12 ft.Buellny don't mind me just don't wish to see or hear of anybody getting hurt thats all. | ||

Bads1, No big deal. I was just kidding with you anyhow. Seriously though, I hope it doesn't whack me in the leg. I can't really see how it would hit me with the swing arm in the way, but I suppose anything is possible. I've done much more dangerous stuff in the Gulf war, Bosnia, Haiti, and Somalia, so I kind of see dangerous a little differently....having survived two helicopter crashes. Dana...reread what I typed. The chances of it hitting the operator are next to nil. Never said anything about someone who for whatever reason would choose to stand behind someones bike while they were doing a burnout. That in & of itself sounds kinda dangerous & foolish. And 10-12' thats it? Out on the road I would sure hope you arent tailgating a fellow rider at that small of a distance. | ||

Dyna reread what I typed.It happened in the parking lot of Ukes I was sitting on my bike at idle 10-12 feet behind. Not standing behind it.I assure you i was at safe distance.What does someone have to do draw you a friggn picture? |
