One of the first things Donut and I said we needed when we both had motorcycles was a 2-way radio. I saw these on eBay and was wondering if anyone knows if they are any good. (Also if any Badweb sponsors could let us know if they had anything comparable) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10066&item=2465921109 edited by dullorb on March 09, 2004 |

That seems VERY spendy to me... I use a Cobra 2-way radio while playing paintball (we use six of them for the team). They can be bought for $40 for TWO from Wal-Mart and you can then get a headset for them. I've never had trouble hearing over the combat/yelling/running so I would imagine they would work fine on a bike. The only feature they don't seem to have is for a pillion rider to tap into your radio (but those don't come with that either, you would have to buy them), but at that price you could buy four Cobra radio's and be set. The range on the ones I have seems to be about 1.5-2 miles effectively from INSIDE the house talking to someone outside a house. They are "push to talk" radio's and when you have the headset the mic and transmit button is inline and easy to get to. The ones I got came with the earpiece. |

I tried these, and while the radios are fine, the wind noise does not work with off the shelf microphones. You need some sort of noise cancelling circuit. It can be done though. I have a pair of headset mics that plug into cell phones, and have a vox, amp, and noise cancelling circuits. I can talk on the cell phone at 80 mph in traffic with a supertrapp and people can't tell I am even on a bike. It's amazing. I got them to try and rig them to an FRS radio like the above, but never got them to work right, they seem to want an open mic. They have sat in boxes for a couple years now If I built up a simple mixer, I could probably get them working with a VOX, but I don't have the time. If anyone has experience with a cheap noise cancelling mic that works OK with FRS, I would be interested. I don't mind just pushing a button to talk. |

The most recent issue of Motorcycle Consumer News had an article aboout how to set up bike to bike for under $100. Try to get a copy of that issue. There's really good advice. My father-in-law did it, and it works fine. Not as nice as my Autocom system but it's about the fifth the cost. I got the Autocom because I really wanted the music; I didn't think the bike to bike would be a big deal. But after a few rides with bike-to bike, I think it adds alot the ride. By the way, we have GMRS radios and get about 1 to 2 miles of range in town. FRS should deliver 1/2 to one mile. |

I will try to find it, but if you can post some of the highlights that would be helpful. Don't know if I will be able to scare up that publication around here... Thanks! |

These are what my wife and I use. The range is incredible, they are rechargable, and the VOX works great. They don't have a push button option because they don't need it. Communicators are a "you get what you pay for deal". These were pricey, but they work perfectly. |

I too use the Collett 900s. They work awesome. It is the only communicator I would recommend. |
