I'll preface this with I have never raced on a track with elevation change. Holy cow!!!!!!!! That was all I could think of my first time ever at Road Atlanta!! Smoke and I started with times in the 2.08 range and dropped them to around 1.47 by the end of the day. I rode with the 600 novices so Smoke, Shred and I could ride together. I was able to mix it up pretty good with the 600 novices. There were a lot of corners where they would slow me down (a lot). I would get a good run and by T-7 I was able to get side by side a few times, only to be left as we went down the looooong back stretch towards T-10. Then they would either slow me down or I was able to out brake them into 10. Some times I was able to pick the off out of 12 onto the main stretch or get them into T-1 with some late braking. Another good place I was able to get them was in the Esses, out of T-5 or into T-6 (again with late braking), only to have them pass me on the loooong stretch to T-10 and then slow me down again. All in all it was a fun day of practice and I was able to dice it pretty good with a few of them in some corners... I am pretty sure a few of them were scratching their heads as the "tractor motor" was there. Not to shabby for me never having been here before, on a near stock Buell (belt drive and all)... LWSolo16 tomm... I will use it as practice for the sprints on Sun... I may just have something for them for those SVs and Ducs!! I'll probably get my but handed to me in HWTSS... Lots of riders there with times in the 1.40ish range... I'll post up tomm!! |

LW Solo16... My grid position was middle on the first row, of wave 2 (the novices). Lugged it a bit on the start but going into turn 1, solidly in 3rd place. As we came up the hill into a blind chicane, the two bikes ahead of me slowed down. This forced me off my line and I was not able to recover, so I rode off into the grass and watched the pack go by... as I fell from from 3rd to 14th... I kept it up, got back on the track and decided I was not going to finish last. I put my head down and got to business. By the end of the 16 laps I passed a few novices and experts. I later found out I finshed 8th in the novice class. In HW Solo, Smoke's (Tim) grid position was also the middle of the front row, 2nd wave. On the start, Tim was able to hold a few guys off and enter turn 1 in 1st place!! Tim held that position through the blind chicane, but lost a spot or 2 in the esses. I'll let Tim post about his race, but he did finish 11! HWT for both Tim and I tomm and LWTSB for me. We'll probably get clobbered in HWT, but I may have something for the LW guys. More later... |

HWTSS. I was again on the front row. I got another decent start and maintained 3rd throughout the race to the finish. I also managed to pass a few of the expert riders. Upon returning to the pits, I noticed I broke a front muffler strap and the belly pan was taking a beating. I was able to replace the muffler strap and make some metal plates to help hold the belly pan on. LWTSB. Started again on the front row and grabbed third heading into turn one. During this race I got behind some slower traffic and slowly picked them off. Nearly missed turn 12 as I came down hill into it, only to find 2 extremely slower riders. I was hard on the front AND back brake and was forced to downshift an extra gear. This caused the rear tire to hop and it looked like I wasn’t going to make the turn. At the last minute I was able to throw the bike into the turn and dive under the 2 riders. I later saw the 2nd place rider go down in turn 10a. I kept on the gas and finished 2nd!! Got back to the pits and found the rear belt drive was missing some teeth!! Many thanks to my dad and Mike for helping out. Also thanks to Mike2, the 3% crew, Tim and all those who helped or stopped by to show some support. Overall it was a great race weekend. No crashes, no race ending mechanicals and a whole lotta fun!! Did I mention it was really hot in the pit area? NEXT: Roebling road in July. |

It was great to see some Buells at road Atlanta! You looked great!! Me and Ramm were sitting at turn 8 flag post, if you remember seeing a group of guys hanging out at the flagman's pavillion on the back stretch, that was us. Me and a friend are trying to get into Wera, but are trying to figure out which bikes to start out with, he wants to start out with an R6, but there no way I am starting out in the meat grinder! Would love to start out with a Buell because of comfort, but will not use mine and I'm having no luck finding another for cheap. So I'm looking to start with a sv650 or a ninja 250, so I can learn for cheaper. Hopefully next season I'll be on the track with you. |

Jeffro, Thanks for the compliments! A 250 or an SV650 would probably be the least expensive way to get into racing. For the price of 1 Buell and race prepping it, you could get 2 SVs. Good luck and hope to see you out there!! |
