After about 4000 miles on the front BT-020 of my XB9r, I can hear and feel pretty significant cupping; the leading edge of the off-center tread on both sides is more worn than the trailing edge giving almost a sawtooth tread profile. All I can find on the topic regarding motorcycles indicates this is likely caused by hard braking when leaned in the turns (Guilty!) . I thought a harder compound would wear better than the soft oem sport rubber and other than this, it has.

Anyone else seen this?

Yea, when I ran the BT010's, I had the same problem. Some tread patterns are prone to cupping. Not a problem with the Metzler Sportec M-1's

Suggestions: Maintain proper air pressure, avoid tires with groove around center circumference, read section on trail braking and try to avoid/lessen use of front brake in tight turns. Use front to scrub speed before initiating turn. Stick with sport (soft compound) tires if you ride at a sporting pace. Harder compound tires will, at the very least, be a disappointment if you pride yourself on fast cornering.

Don,

The first two front tires on my Firebolt cupped. The stock 207's and then a D220.

Now that I have them balanced correctly, there is no cupping. The dealers do not know how to balance these front wheels with the perimeter disc's, they don't chuck up in a machine, so likely they gave you back your new front tire/wheel without *really* balancing it.

Insuring the front tire is balanced fixed my bike from cupping the front tire.

I've had an X1 Lightning and now an XB9R and cupping on the front tire has been a problem on both bikes. The Metzler's are not nearly as bad as the Dunlops were. Proper tire inflation is the best way to maximize the wear, but you will still change front tires long before the tread is worn out.

Most likely cause of cupping: under-inflation.

all the other causes that have been mentioned are real, but under-inflation is numero-uno...

I used to cup my race tires, well actually it was more like flat spotting the edges....drifting.

I havent ridden like that since a 170 or so get off.

now i'm pilk-of the chicken stip.....
