I went down to the Buell tent at Daytona today and looked at the new oil lines (to the oil cooler) on the XB12's. They are definitely different than the earlier oil lines.

The new oil lines have hard pipes that run the braided stainless lines parallel to each other, whereas the old oil lines have hard pipes that run the braided stainless lines criss-cross to each other. The new design also pushes the oil lines clear of the clutch cable.

The new design also has a clip to separate the braided stainless steel oil lines. I bought this clip, but I can't mount it (to my early model XB9S) since the old-style oil lines criss-cross and do not run parallel to each other (the clip needs the oil lines to be parallel to work).

If my current oil lines are rubbing against each other and the clutch cable, will Buell replace the two lines with the new, redesigned lines under warranty?

Is there some kind of technical service bulletin for this production change?

Wow. Glad to see Buell is now in a position to sweat this kind of stuff. They have come a long way from my tube frame (which I love).

I doubt they'd replace them with those lines.
altho the old lines have been superceeded to a new part number of h0044.02a8

so they've done something.

and no theres been no service bulletins.

but I have to be the inquiring asshole that I am..
its a running change in a new model.
theres not been any real big problem why should they have to change everything for free.
yes if your lines are worn thru they should be warrantied. But to expect BMC to pay for your bike to be upgraded is like saying well last year all they had was the 9's now they have 12's I wonder if buell will upgrade me for free.

hell the oh so great honda won't even replace broken frames on goldwings..but they will weld them.

I just don't understand all this mentality of everything should be free.

I am not bitching at you don't get me wrong. But it is a running change in production that is all.

but yes if your lines are worn it probably would be warrantied but with the new lines for the the 03's not the 04's.

My 03 9s oil lines touch muffler. Something you might want to check.

If you hold the line while the fitting to the swingarm is tightened then the line should not hit. If you try to tighten the lines without holding them as you tighten the oil line to swingarm fitting, it will allow the line to rotate down and hit the pipe.

Thanks. I knew that's what I needed to do. But, I was looking for the lazy way out like using some sort of clip that rests on the muffler and holds up the lines.

Yep, I'm going right out now and tightening those lines the right way. The racing is recording on the DVR so I won't miss a second.

Buckinfubba,

I'm not looking for anything free. I'm looking for a correction to a manufacturing/design defect. What's wrong with that?

They made a mistake in design/assembly. I'd like it fixed. The bike came with a warranty that covers manufacturer's defects. I paid for the bike, I paid for the warranty. I don't want anything for free. I just want what I paid for.

No amount of abuse, misuse or neglect has caused my oil lines and clutch lines to rub. Improper assembly has caused these parts to exceed the service limits defined in the shop manual.

I'm not looking for my bike to be upgraded. I'm looking for my bike to be fixed.

Dude, Bubba is God's gift to Buell. You should be so lucky as to have him for anything to do with your bike. If something is wrong, it will be fixed(by Buell). Too many people want everything for free in this world. If you want advice from this site, be cool....

I can see bubbas point seeing how I think that i have read 15 posts in the past month about someone hearing of some change and looking to see if there has been some sort of factory recall.

it seems that people are just looking for something on the bike to be messed up and are expecting it due to harleys reputation. get over it! AMF was out of the picture 20 years ago but harley still cant shake the bad vibes.

I think that what bubba is saying is to enjoy your bike because its pretty damn reliable.

oh yeah, and hide that string thats hanging out from your bikini.

Hippo's point is valid and his reasoning stands up perfectly.

Imagine if an oil line failure lead to his death, you think Buell would want that? Even if oil line failure didn't kill him, just his XB's motor, you think Buell would want that either?

Clearly Hippo's XB has an issue with rubbing oil lines. I suggest he take it to his dealer for repairs under the terms of the warranty. Whether or not repairs warrant new or upgraded oil line replacement is not for me to say but I'd assume Hippo's dealer could and will say.

if you read what I said and I prefaced it because I knew it would be taken wrong.
Yes they have new lines for the 03's and if yours are rubbed thru yes they should be warrantied. But not with the ones on the 04 lines , with the new lines for the 03's. that is all I said.

I also answered you about the service bulletins, and that it would be a warranty issue.

In your first post you asked if they would replace with "these" new upgraded lines. I assumed you were talking about the ones on the 04's since that was what you were talking about.

then in your second post you say " i was not looking for an upgrade" yeah I am being nitpicky now about the words used.

I have no beef with you, I answered your question and I ask not that anything be taken the wrong way because it was not meant that way.

If the brake lines that are on the bike now are defective, I'm sure the dealer and Buell will make it right. If the dealer has a hard time with correcting a problem, then call Buell CS.

Have you talked to your dealer about repairing/replacing the oil lines? What did they say?

It may be possible that they have discontinued the older part numbers and the replacements (if any) might be the parts from the 04's, but I doubt it. And to expect that they should be, as others have noted, is kinda "out there".

Call you dealer to make an appointment. I'm sure they'll make it right if it's wrong. If not go to another dealer or call Buell CS.

Thanks for the (much needed) information. I should have been more clear. What I don't want to happen is to have my current oil lines (the ones that are rubbing) replaced with the exact same oil lines. If that's the case, they're just going to rub again.

If Buell has an updated oil line that solves the problem -- that's great. If they don't, I think it's simpler for me to just get the '04-style lines and be done with it, whether I have to pay for it or not.

I appreciate your willingness to put up all the info and advice. I apologize if I got a bit heated.

The bike and me are about 1200 miles from home right now. The local dealer here, with a Buell sign hanging out front, only has a used Thunderbolt as their entire Buell inventory. It makes me a bit leary to bring my bike there. I'm going to wait until I get home to my preferred dealer.
