NTN 6006 LU orange seal bearings, probably installed in 04(?). About 10,000 miles. They are clacking and a banging after a 25 mile work ride. Quiet when on the stand this morning before I left for work. First noise was the ride home the day before when rolling it in the garage. Same tonight and confirmed it to be the wheel bearings and not the belt or idler. Look fine,no rust streaks on the outside. The upgraded belt has always seemed TOO tight to me......and is probably the cause....... Any ideas about that belt being too tight? I pieced out the parts on eBay and can't believe one of the components are mismatched in size/compatibility/teeth number. I would think that if something was a misfit,it would be TOO loose or TOO tight to even go together. She's down for the count. XB12R becomes the work ride bike till this is resolved.......... |

Lots of Ulys eat these rear wheel bearings; see the BB&D forum for threads on the subject. Get the new KBC black seal bearings from your dealer. AFAIK, that's as good as any bearing out there. I agree with you on the belt- if you can get it on without breaking it, the pulleys and belt are the right pieces. Is it still as tight as it was when you first put it on? They do stretch out a little. |

Yeah, still just a s tight as when I first installed the upgraded parts. Probably about 4K on it. It is tight even with the suspension compressed a couple of inches. Way tighter than my XB12R. Weird(and confused) |

I was just thinking I could swap belts with my X1. It may be stretched enuf to work fine on the XB9R and the XB9R belt on the X1 could be allowed for with belt tension adjustment that the X1 provides......if that belt is particularly short/tight for some odd reason. Unfailing plan? |

Not exactly "pit stop speed",but after the bike was on the stand, the wheel was off in 8 minutes. Just goes to show you how well the design is for maintenance. Anyways,I was pretty sure the left bearing was the culprit, till I seen this: Thought the bearing spacer might have been "moving around",but that seems impossible with the axle torqued. Figure the scar is from the spacer not being centered in it's warranty replacement of the bearings.Maybe walking a bit with the axle on the several installations and removals over the years. Bearings felt fine...till I slightly squeezed the left one in a vise and then I had a "catch" in it as I turned it. Right one was OK. Comparing the XB9R to the XB12R,the belts feel about the same for tension........so I'm going with it being OK and that the bearing just plain went away. On my other hand, I remember Cochise's XB longs belt being so loose that I could easily spin the idler pulley........ |

do the XB's have a way to adjust belt tension? And if they do, is it via the rear axle position or is it via the tensioner pulley? I don't NEED to know, just curious for when I start working on my future Uly |

No adjustment. The axle has a taper on the belt side. Take the brake caliper off and when you loosen the axle(15 turns),the bearing slides down the taper,on to the base circle of the axle. This allows the belt to go loose enuf to get the idler pulley off. Finish spinning out the axle, disengage the belt and out comes the wheel. |

Is this an '03 XB9? Does it have the '04 belt conversion? If yes, was the idler pulley changed along with the belt, and other pulleys? The '03, and '04 pulleys are different, and may have caused the too tight belt. Good the the wheel bearings went out, and not the transmission bearings! |

Yes sir,03 XB. Shopped a long time for parts....... brandy new XB12 rear pulley on eBay for 26 bucks,a 04 idler pulley for $9.99 .......and "a 200 miles on it" 27 tooth front pulley for 36 bucks. Brand new old stock,04 belt from a dealer that was getting rid of it for $100.00. Belt guards from American Sport Bike. I wrote a nice story about idler wheels on ATC,but damned if I can find it. 03 has a single bearing in it and the 04 has dual bearings in it. The fork is different ,but the actual belt wheel is interchangeable if you wanted to put a double bearing set up in an 03 wheel. That is, the wheels are exactly the same with the internal difference made up with a shorter bearing spacer to accommodate the dual bearings. I highly doubt you could even get the 03 front sprocket to work at all with the 04 stuff. The teeth are way smaller and would chew up the belt like a buzz saw......if you could even get it assembled that way. |

Oh yeah,it was the left side wheel bearing that went bad.........way less load on it compared to the right bearing(belt drive side). Wonder if that bearing got dropped or the dealer installed it by tapping the inner race with a hammer. As hard as they are, that's all it takes to dent the bearing ball raceway and cause early failure. |

That's actually not a bad theory. |

The upgraded belt has always seemed TOO tight to me......and is probably the cause....... DO THIS: Check the bearing behind the drive sprocket, make sure it is not bad. Tight belts can wreck that bearing, happened to me. |
