Ok, gang. I need help ASAP! Last night I was out for at least an hour ride with my lady and the Blast was running like a champ. Got home, parked it in the garage like usual. This morning I strap on my laptop bag & tank bag and fire it up to let it warm while I lock the entrance door to the garage as I usually do. Halfway back to the large door I hear the bike stop running. Fire it back up and reach for my helmet and the damned thing dies again. Fired it up and again, it dies after about 5 seconds.

I check the fuel petcock to make sure it's open and it is. Fire it up...dies in less 10 seconds. Might even be as little as 5 seconds. Check the trip meter and see that I have about 107 miles on this tank. Perhaps I'm into the reserve area a little earlier than normal. Switch the petcock to reserve, fire it up and it dies in 5 seconds or so. Ok, this time I'll keep the revs up a bit so it's not idling to see if it still dies. Fire it up and bump the revs to a constant. Sounds good then it dies in 5 seconds. Didn't have time to troubleshoot so I take off my bags, throw them into the car and go to work.

It ran GREAT last night. Never had issues like this. All I can think of is one of the sensors might be killing it (kick stand, clutch, or BAS) but if one of them were the cause would it consistently run for 5+ seconds then die?? If it was fuel why would it start, idle, rev, etc all with no issue then cut out after 5 seconds?



I tried searching the forum for similar issues but couldn't get anything relevant to come up. I need some tips and ideas to check for tonight. Anyone?

Start simple, Fuel Spark Compression, you already crossed off fuel.....

Swampy, If I've already crossed off fuel, then I can cross off spark & compression as the engine runs fine until something kills it. I do have a new boot I will put on to see if that helps but I doubt it as it ran fine when I parked it last night and runs fine when first started.

Ed, I will try bypassing the clutch and kickstand switches. I will first try testing it with the clutch pulled in. If it runs then but dies a few seconds after releasing the clutch then it is likely that switch. I just hope it's something that simple and can be easily bypassed.

What's the trick to the BAS if that one's the culprit? I guess I shouldn't worry about it being something else until I rule out the safety switches and boot. Thanks, guys!

Ed, I may give you a phone call this evening if I get stumped! LOL

Woohoo!

I got home, changed into my grease monkey clothes, and hunkered down for a long night of troubleshooting the Blast in the garage. Fortunately the problem was solved in a matter of minutes.

First thing I did was hold in the clutch lever after starting it to see if it still died. It ran fine. Let go of the lever and it died. Pulled the seat and checked the fuse block and saw that the clutch safety diode/blade was higher than the rest of the blades. Pulled it out, wiped it off, blew out the blade socket and reinserted it. Fired it up and voila! Engine stayed running. I guess vibrations simply made the diode work it's way out of the socket. Thank God for simple solutions!

Buttoned the bike back up and considered a celebratory ride but reconsidered since I was a little buzzed from the large adult beverage I had with dinner. Instead, I pulled out the patio furniture, sat with my sweetheart in the cool evening air and enjoyed a fine cigar.

Congrats, Johnny. One thing I've learned that most times when a Blast won't start, it's a very simple and cheap fix, like a kill switch or bad boot. Occasionally it might be a bit trickier, like a bad ignition. Usually though, it's the little things.

Congrats! I had the same thing happen with the Big Kids Blast after I put the base gasket on a couple of weeks ago.
