i want to make the leap into a digital SLR camera, im no pro and im not looking to get in over my head. I know some of this was gone over not too long ago, but it was much more high line equiptment than i would be looking for. any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys  | ||

There are many great cameras out there today, here are a couple that I would look at. 1. Canon Digital Rebel. These cameras have long been a leader in entry level DSLR's The current model the EOS 5000D has 15 megapixels, which is actual more than many people need. Earlier versions of this camera are abundant, and often are a great buy as a lot of people are always upgrading, and selling their perfectly good earlier model. 3.The Nikon D5000 is very good as well, and has a fold out screen which some people really like. Both Canon and Nikon are from companies that have enormous lists of excellent lenses for any purpose or budget. Once you give into the temptation to start collecting these, the sky is the limit. Personally, I think that for the enthusiastic amateur photographer, the smaller and more handy a camera is, the more likely is is to get used and the better photos one is likely to take. 3. The Panasonic G1 is a very small camera that looks like a mini SLR, has interchangeable lenses, but uses an electronic viewfinder. This makes the camera much smaller that the Canon or Nikon. The electronic view finder is not my cup of tea, however. 4. Finally, I suggest that you take a look at the Canon G10. This 14.7 megapixel is not an SLR at at, and does not have interchangeable lenses. However it is so small and light, and takes such great photos, that I use it much more than my Canon IDs Mklll, because it is so much fun to use, At $450 it deserves a quick look at least. | ||

I have a Sony A350 that I really like. It takes all my Minolta lenses. | ||

Torque, I was using an older version of the Rebel when I took those photos a few weeks ago. Canon Rebel XT (350D). Its 8MP, and you can get them for a good price. Dosen't have all the bells and whistles like the brand new one that can record video, but its still an awesome camera. I have had it since 2005? I have taken almost 6000 photos with it. The camera has been through hell, dropped many times, rode with it out in thunderstorms and yet it keeps on tickin. There is mold or something growing in the lens after the last storm, so I will be upgrading the lens soon. | ||

What's your budget and editing intention? If you're looking at $1000 for a body, that's one category, if you're looking at $2500 for a body, that's another set of options. You have any lenses that you want to be able to use with your digi-SLR? That is what drives me to look at Nikon (I'm heavily invested in Nikon glass) | ||

Sony A-200, a really nice inexpensive DSLR camera that as mentioned above takes Minolta mount lenses. Here's my porch panther  | ||

If you are only looking for personal use, go USED... seriously. Especially if you are mostly interested in digital images for email and web postings - you just don't need extremely high resolution. When you start printing at 8x10 or larger - that's when you might start feeling the need for higher resolution. | ||

Hey guys, I'm kind of in the same boat. I don't currently own a DSLR but would love to get one, I received a Pentax ME a few years ago with a multitude of lenses. Are the Pentax DSLRs worth mentioning? I do know that they will accept all of my old lenses. I just don't know if I should continue to invest in Pentax or move into something else. | ||

Canon has a new Rebel called the T1i that shoots 1080 HD video as well as still images. I currently shoot with a Canon 40D, 30D and 20D - I love these cameras. I also have used the original "digital" rebel and, for the price, it was a nice camera. I think if you stick with Canon or Nikon you can't go wrong (lots of lens choices). Also, be aware that more mega pixels does not always mean better images. There's a lot more to it than that. Basically, if your looking to spend between $500 - $8,000+, there should be a DSLR to meet your needs. If you want to stay below $500 and still want a DSLR, look for a couple year old used one that someone is "upgrading" from. A great source for used DSLRs is www.fredmiranda.com | ||

Canon has a couple package specials going at the moment as well - body and 2 lenses (18-55mm and a larger telephoto, either 70-300mm or 55-250mm IS depending on the body). I just purchased a Rebel XSi body and a Canon 28-135mm IS USM lens to take with me on my rapidly approaching honeymoon and am just starting to learn how to use it. My SLR ineptness aside, I really like the camera and lens thus far. | ||
