The one good thing that occurred in this process is that the dealer did 3 sequential steps and only the last step solved the problem. 1st: Replaced ECM -- Did not help 2nd: Cleaned Ground (Tech Tip) -- Did not help 3rd: Replaced Idle Air Controller and O-ring I have had the bike back for a week now, put on over 800 miles and it runs flawlessly! So for you '08 owners who are still experiencing horrible running conditions in Gears 1 - 3, this might be your solution. |

thats great news... however, i see that one cost 175 bucks... probably on warranty, but getting a dealer to go along with replacing it... if it isnt showing as defective on their computer might be a trick.. |

It won't show up as defective. Mine was replaced as an experiement. Touted by the Buell techs on the phone with my dealer. It was covered in the end |

You suppose it was just the Oring? Did they let you look at the old parts? |

Okc99, I'm trying to remember the problem you had. Was it an inconsistent idle, hunting between 750 rpm and 1500 rpm? Mine started doing this over the last two weeks and was growing worse on a trip I took this weekend, as well as exhibiting some other running issues, stalled while idling a couple of times, momentary power losses at cruise speed a couple of times. It comes and goes. Won't always settle down to a 1000 rpm idle speed. Sometimes it hunts between 700 and 1500 rpms at idle. I changed the sparkplugs this afternoon and it seemed better just afterward, then I changed my oil and when I restrarted the bike it started hunting for idle speed and then died. Restarted fine though. (Message edited by rwven on May 31, 2009) |

Rwven, You name it, I had it in terms of coughing, sputtering, then CATCHING when I had the throttle 1/2 open and almost throwing me off. It was like riding a bull that bucked randomly. I seriously suggest replacing this component. I don't know much about it or if the O-ring is inspectable separately. But if you're like me, riding it in a crappy condition is worth the cost of replacing them both even if the dealer won't replace it under warranty. |

Okc99, I'll have to look into it. It might be cheaper (given travel expenses to trailer the bike two hours each way) and will certainly be less hassle to just buy the part myself and replace it. I'm not too keen on going through the three visit repair process that seems to follow any engine control fault on a Buell motorcycle... |

i traded my 08 scg and its low speed issues, due to lack of customer service cooperation...i asked CS to change a couple of sensors and was denied.... it was a real gamble to buy another 08 buell.. im starting to get a lot of miles on my uly and im getting a little worried about the 08s long term reliability...a lot of complaints from 08 owners and no answers from the moco..if you have an 08 that runs good, you are amoung the fortunate.. Hey OKC99- I'm having a problem similar to what I see described above. MY dealer is also having problems nailing it, and instead has done several unneeded replacements (spark plugs, muffler, fuel line) and nothing works. Here's a video clip of what mine does... does this look familiar to you? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50hMpBRVA3E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TB4gasNGCt4 http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/454256.html?1242311551 |

My '08 Scg ran like crap and was hard to start, even after a reflash that did correct my speed. Traded for a '09 Scg and it runs SO much smoother. |

That's pretty close to what mine is doing. It stalls less frequently, but it's just started on mine so perhaps it hasn't gotten a bad as it's going to. |

Somehow or other you need to get your bikes to the Buell Homecoming this weekend and ask Erik Buell himself what the Buell Motorcycle intends to do about your crappy running bike(s). I'd be surprised if he blew you off. Maybe, just maybe they'd wheel your bike(s) into the factory and fix the sob's. |

For what its worth...CF0012.5AA is the O-ring, available seperately. Don't have any on the shelf at the moment...but it's showing as readily available if ordered. $1.50 Also food for thought - I have similar problems with my EFI cars and trucks. The IAC likes to get carboned up and give wonky idle 'features'. I don't know if this is the case (my Uly is an '06), but a possibility nonetheless. Ron - let me know if you want me to order the O-ring for you. I'll even spring for it and shipping to your house in the name of "experimentation" - just keep me posted as to whether it helps/cures the issue (Message edited by ratbuell on June 01, 2009) |

If the IAC gets carboned up, is there a recommended procedure for cleaning it? |

There is so many specifics to what my 08 did before the IAC replacement fixed it that I couldn't do it justice by typing it out. Buell_freq, Rwven, or anyone else that wants to compare notes on 08 behavior, just give me a call and I'll tell you exactly what happened. I'm gonna watch this youtube vid here in a sec. 765-714-9233 (David) |

Buell_freq, I saw you vids (great idea by the way, it's proof!). Mine hunted for an idle even more vigorously. It looked like a roller coaster, 1400 to 800, back to 1400, etc. You needs to make a vid of you riding it. That's when the "bucking rodeo bull buell" really occurred for me. |

I don't know about a factory procedure...but on my cars, I dip an old toothbrush in carb cleaner, spray the IAC pintle and seat for a good long time, and brush it like my dog's teeth. Spray-rinse with more carb cleaner, reassemble. Again...that's just on my cars. Never done it on a Buell. |

Well its back in the shop again, this time with dents and scratches because it lost power as I rolled up a hill (driveway) onto a street. I've seem my bike do the same as you described on other days. Humidity plays a factor in this and I think 'good day' was a description both of the weather and the bike's behavior. Someone about mentioned Buell homecoming. Great idea! If my bike is back by then and still acting up, I just might do that. That and file a lawsuit. At least the trip will be fun. |

Rat, I think the situation that a majority of us 08 riders are in is that we don't know where the IAC is, how to get to it, or what it looks like. Your input is much appreciated though. Posting Youtube vids is a great idea though for those of us who are not as mechanically adept. We could use more Buellers with camcorders and extra time on their hands. Maybe even a new link/thread dedicated specifically/solely to vids of common procedures, etc. |

My 08 XB12X has been having the exact same problem as buell_freq's bike... It's in the shop now on its 3rd week. They say they are working with the factory/tech services. The tech seems to think it has to do with a defective flywheel...(I'm guessing because it has to do with timing?) but he is having trouble convincing the factory. Whatever the problem is, its causing the AFV to adjust down into the low 80s. On another note, I was going crazy with all the nice weather we were having and not having a bike... So I got a 2002 Buell Blast off craigslist to run around on while I'm waiting. |

a majority of us 08 riders are in is that we don't know where the IAC is, how to get to it, or what it looks like. I'll say it again, and again, and again. If anyone wants to call me out on it, I'll gladly show them a pic of my garage with its growing library...if you're going to wrench on your bike - EVEN for "JUST" an oil change - buy the shop manual. 60 of the smartest dollars you will ever spend. If you want to see exploded view diagrams of the pieces and parts, spend another $48 and get the parts book. For $108, you can know every single piece in your bike, how to access it, take it off, put it back on and torque it into place. If you need to replace it, you'll even have the numbers you need to order a new part. The IAC is on the throttle body / intake assembly. |

2008 XB service manual - 99490-08ya, $60 2008 XB electrical diagnostic manual - 99493-08y, $60 2009 XB service, 99490-09Y, $60 2009 XB electrical, 99493-09Y, $60 08 Uly parts, 99575-08YA, $48 09 XB parts, 99574-09Y, $48. All these part numbers are in the white "technical service literature" pamphlet that came with your bike's owners manual in the "owner kit". It ships with every bike. If you got a manual, you should have gotten this too. If you'd like one of the pamphlets, it's part number is 99528-09. A tool box is not complete without the instructions. |

The IAC is part # P0282.5AA the cost is $140.00 with the 20% discount from that Chicago based HD dealer that must not be named.... Do I bite the bullet, or do I commit to over 8 hours driving time (2, 4+ hour round trips)with no guarantee that the IAC will be warranted? |

Yes, buy the manual, buy the parts manual. They will more than pay for themselves the first time you use them. I still have to get the electrical diagnostic manual... |

I'll install it. I have the handy dandy 2008 XB service manual! It's held in with one screw and it mounts right into the top of the fuel rail. It's just under the airbox and easily accessible. A lot easier than changing that darned rear spark plug! My wife said much the same thing you did. She counseled me not to waste the time, just order the part and see if it works. |

Zt730 "Whatever the problem is, its causing the AFV to adjust down into the low 80s." This is what looks like the main reason of most of the poor running. My 08 uly has a AFV in the mid to low 80's bone stock. My alt. is roughly 1000'. My 04 12s bone stock has an AFV of 102, and will run circles around my 08. Also my 01 X1 with race ECM, K and N, supertrapp has an AFV of 104 and runs so much better than my 08. The AFV adjusts the whole fuel map leaner or richer depending on how it learns. An AFV of 80 will lean the fuel map out about 20% across the whole map. Resulting is in poor running thoughout the rpm range. If we can figure out why the new DDFI III is thinking our bikes are running rich and then over compencating lean most of our issues will be solved. ZT730 please keep us posted on any progress with your bike. Al |
