I was just wondering. I mapped it out and it's about 2,000 miles or 30 hours. The furthest I have rode was on my Blast and that was only about 300 miles. Would this be a three day trip or two? What kind of stuff would I need to bring with me? I don't have the Blast anymore, I ride a firebolt now. Thanks! | ||

That would be an awesome trip! I was thinking I want to plan my vacation for that next year (to late this year). I know it's early, but if you do it again next year I'll go! Oh, bring a camera. | ||

James Provo rode his Blast from LA to Homecoming several years ago. If he can do that you should be able to ride an XB with no problem. The problem with blasting (pun intended) through is that you miss so much in between. p.s. I love your profile pic | ||

2008xb12sg: I hope it will be an awesome trip. It is late to start to plan a trip so I know I will be a little unprepared. EZ: I'm going to change my oil before and after. I'm right at 7,500 miles on my bike right now. My tires look good too. Fskinner: I don't know where I'm going to be on the 3rd. I know I'm going to be going through Denver though. I sent you a PM with my cell number. Iamike: I though that pic was funny too! Do you guy's think that I will need to bring some rain gear? I don't have any but I was thinking about ordering some. In the morning I'm going to be ordering some Cortech sport saddlebags so I don't have to use my backpack. What do you guy's think about some extra fuel? Maybe in a liter bottle and keep it in a bag or something like that. I would hate to run out of gas! | ||

The longest ride I've taken was homecoming last year back to Omaha, NE in a day. That was like 520 miles? Not too bad but I wouldn't want to do more miles than that multiple days in a row. I'd say spreading your 2100 mile trek across 4 days would work alright. If you plan conservatively, you can always decide to put a couple hundred extra miles in at the end of the day to get ahead of schedule. BTW find yourself some medicated goldbond powder or something similar. When you can no longer feel your ass, just slip a bit of that stuff down your pants and everything will wake right back up! | ||

My tires look good too If you start with new tires after 4052 miles there's a chance that you may need new ones, or run into a flat. I'd make sure I had the funds just in case. Maybe have locations of repair/tire shops along the way in case you have any problems. I would think on a ride that long (at least with my luck) there's a good chance of having something come up. I would also (if you don't have one) think of investing in a cheap gps to keep in the saddle bags. But then again my sence of direction sucks...One more thought, maybe see if there's some badwebbers along the way that won't mind a visitor for a night. Give you a chance to rest and give the bike a look over. And like I said (even though it's early) I want to go next year. So I would love to hear the details of your trip. | ||

Starting with tires that have 7500 miles on them will insure that you will need a tire change DURING your journey. | ||

I'll be starting the trip on a set of Stradas with around 1k miles on them, BUT I'm not going as far as you are. My round trip is a little less than your one-way! Props to you for not bringing a trailer queen! | ||

Don't forget to stop in here on your way through. Pahrump is just west of death valley, and east of vegas, if you call ahead we can have your tires or whatever ready for you. Make sure that you either take a copy of the BRAN list of the states you will be going through or have the number of a couple of people you can call to locate help. Most likely you won't need help but the peace of mind is nice. I made the mistake of taking a trip 'with plenty of tread left' and paid for it. The HD/Buell dealer in Alburquerque nailed me for $260 on a new rear tire. It was my own fault for taking off on a not-so-new tire. If you are on a schedule you need rain gear. If you get wet and keep on riding you can get hypothermic. It can scew up your judgement and you may never make it home. I messed up and made plans for the 6th so it looks like I won't be coming again this year. | ||

I did a similar ride 4 months ago. I had a thread started and it had some great info in it. The best advise I can give is this. Just remember that even if any part of the trip is less than desirable (cold wet wind sore...) its part of the journey and will be a memory that you look back fondly and laugh about it. A runner doesnt always run a marathon just because its fun but because of the sense of accomplishment. | ||

I have to say that the Buell rain gear is really good and packs up quite small. I can fit it into a Firebolt tailbag with no problem. Also a tire plug kit, small pump, Camel Bak, some sort of throttle lock and a spare belt I think are requirements for a long trip. | ||

White, it's a long trip, but it's an adventure. Allow 4 days if you have the time, no less than 3. There is a lot of country you might want to see inbetween and it's nice not to have to race through it. Start with new tires and you wont have to change them on the trip. I got 8k out of Continental Road Attacks. Start your days early. If you leave at sun up, you can knock out a huge number of miles each day. Have a great time. Post pictures. | ||

Just do it. It's going to be tougher than you think in some ways, and it's going to be easier than you think in some ways. you're going to make all kinds of mistakes. You're going to do a lot of things right. On July 5,1973, I left my house in Colorado Springs; 22 hours and 1203 miles later, I arrived at my best friend's house in Lafayette, LA. The next day, I left his house and rode home, arriving 23 hours later. I still talk about that trip. If you ride to Homecoming, you'll have something to talk about for a long time. | ||

This blows  I just found out this morning that I won't be able to get the time off of work. I'm pissed but I know that it's my fault for waiting so long to ask for the time off. Poor planning on my part. I didn't decide earlier because I really didn't know what the home coming was about. Thanks you all your help guy's. I will plan for it next year and hopefully make a few long trips this year to better prepare. |
