I couldn't find the previous thread where i posted the construction pic from my area of Rt78 so I started a new one. After going through multiple layers of NJ state Bureaucracy, I have managed to get to the Project Engineer in charge of the section of Rt78 that has kept me prisoner for 2 months now. For those of you living in the People's Republic of NJ, the phone number to get you through to the DOT is 609-530-2001. It will ring 20 +times before someone answers it and it took 4 previous calls for someone to divulge it to me but it is progress none the less. I left the guy a voice mail message. We'll see what happens next. |

If you will give us the mile marker, which lane & East or West bound on Rt.78 and maybe something identifiable, maybe some of us can flood this gentleman with voicemails to get his attention. Can't hurt, ehhh? Let us know what could help to be said. (Message edited by roadcouch98 on May 20, 2009) |

3+ I'll call just to help out. Total BS in my book. Have you approached any biker cops about this? I had an issue with a new intersection where it wouldn't register either of my bikes and the light would never turn green. I made like a 100 calls and had no luck. I saw an IL HwyPt bike and chased him down, told him about the problem. Then next week the light worked. Only a biker understands our problems, the others are like "great another biker". |

Did you get a chance to call the contractor? And plus 4 on the call to DOT. Maybe I can get them to move on the 295 ramps. |

I'd just turn my flashers on . . . . .stand out there in an orange vest with an BIG intimidating camera and when they came and asked me what I was doing I'd tell them I was submitting a feature story to 3 local media outlets about notifying the contractor, state and police about the unsafe condition on 6 occasions and being blown off . . . you want to have the photos and story in the can when the accident occurs.

the media is on powerful tool today! i just think that might work, snap a pic of a bike layed over right next to the crack and send it in to the local news, they will craft their own story..... |

Guys , I like all of it particularly the bike layed on its side thing but I just left the message for the guy last night. The people that I did actually speak with at DOT at least sounded like they gave a crap which is a start. I'll get the mile markers as it pertains to my exit,11 but at least X12 & 13 are in the same condition. Since they state on their web site that safety is their primary concern, we'll see if this guy gets back to me this morning before we go further. They need to make a temporary tranisition as part of the regular Bid spec if the ramp is not going to be paved as the same time as the lane that it is entering. |

I spoke with the assistant for the Engineer that has control over the project that effects my area of Rt 78. She said that they are allowed a 2" lip. I told her that it is more like 4". She gave me their e mail addresses and said to send a pic asap. If I was correct, she said that they would direct the contractor to correct it immediately. Sure sounds like progress. |

Spoke w/ Jonny Friel 732-699-7372 NJ DOT..He put me in touch w/ head project engineer Angel Toraddo 908-713-0003 He wanted coffee & donuts! NOT KIDDING! Gotta love these guys! Jonny Friedel told me if this problem does not get resolved he will call Angels boss. Maybe it's time to get the press involved. Someone should make the call! |

I went out to the the entrance ramp and measured the lip. It is right around the 2" allowable limit where the ramp joins the travel lane. While it looks much higher than it is, it meets the DOT criteria so until motorcyclists can convince the DOT to change their specs, I will just have to live with it. Even though I am wrong about the height of the lip, it still seems wrong that the contractor is not required to pave a temporary tranisition until they pave the ramp. The ramp isn't in bad shape as it gets neglegable truck traffic on it so repaving it completely is a waste of money |

I apologize for whipping everyone into a frenzy. Maybe I should have measured it in the first place before beating on a hornets nest with a tennis racket. The people that I spoke to at DOT stated that they take core samples every day and that Mr Torrado performs other inspections on a daily basis to insure that the spec is being followed. |

No apologies necessary, 2'' can seem like jumping a curb when running parallel with it, and with Traffic up your a$$!, that could be a little intimidating. It is still very dangerous and just goes to show that we as Motorcyclists are not taken as living Human Beings. Just pieces of Meat to be scraped up and Broadcast for local news Shock Value.
