Half the reason I got an Ipod Shuffle was to have some tunes while I ride. BUT, I simply CANNOT get the earphones to stay in when I put the helmet on, and it's too tight for me to reach in and fix them! Is there a trick to this, or are you guys using some other kind of earbuds? ~SM | ||

Try getting some noise canceling ear buds. The will go into your ear and you shouldn't have any problems with them staying in. | ||

+1 I use a set of JVC earphones I got from Wal-Mart for $15 - the look like an earplug with a headphone built in. They're great for a couple reasons - the earplug parts keeps in in your ear, it blocks out a lot of wind noise so you don't have to jack the volume to hear it, and they will transfer more bass frequency to your ear so the music sounds better. | ||

I was having the same problem using the ones that came with the i-pod. I just picked up a set at Wal-mart that has the piece that hooks over the top of the ear, they have been working well so far. | ||

Get the small green or blue ones from jvc they have a ear plug style and can be squeezed down like ear plugs and then they expand in you ear to stay in. $12.99 @ best buy. | ||

Side tale: It was 79 or 80, I was 19 in the service and rode a new XL250S. Sony came out with this little bitty cassette player in stereo. It had an aluminum case that was black. Coolest feature was the pitch control. Yep original walkman. I got one. Put the batteries in it, head phones on under helmet. Cranked up some Vanhalen and pulled out of the parking lot. Well I couldn't hear the engine revs and laid the bike down in the first turn. | ||

I get the Skull Candy ones from Target. They are around $15-20 per set and I tend to go through a few sets every year. They come with several different sizes of plugs so they stay in really well. | ||

I've had luck licking the iPod earbuds before I put them in, it usually gets them to 'stick' enough to stay put. I also pull the straps of my helmet out as far as possible when I'm putting the lid on, giving a bit more gap between the padding and my head (and the headphone wires). I may get some rubber cement and just put a coat around the outside of the earbud, where the gray rubber ring is. I can't go aftermarket on headphones at the moment; my shuffle II drowned last weekend so I ponied up a whopping $84 with tax for a shuffle III. Size of a tie clip, 4GB / 1000 songs, and controls on the headphone wire instead of the iPod (so I can keep it INSIDE my jacket for when it rains, LOL). | ||

I saw those, pretty neat, but I didn't need that much space, nor did I wanna pay that much for an MP3 player (I'm cheap). I picked up some of the JVC Mushrooms during lunch. They fit really well and drown out a lot of outside noise (2 sizes of memory foam inserts). I think they will probably do the trick. They actually have better specs than the comparable Koss buds, but at 2/3 the price. Thanks for all the feedback! ~SM | ||

They come with several different sizes of plugs so they stay in really well. +100, They stay in the ear, are inexpensive, block wind noise, and sound pretty good, mine are over a year old and no problems. They're one hell of a deal, got mine for less than $10 on line. I got a set of the JVC Marshmallow or what ever they're called at the same time. I got them both cause I wasn't sure which would be better and if the total was over $20 shipping was free. So I got both and worn the JVC set once and gave them to my daughter. They were Ok around the house and whatnot, but on the bike....no so good. | ||

I tried the Sony noise cancelling buds.. ok, but better in a commercial jet or train than fighting the wind noise on my Suomy helmet. Most of the regular ear buds I've tried let way too much noise in unless they have foam or gel ear pieces, so you end up with the volume cranked to hearing destroying levels. If your helmet is noisy ( mine is ) & you get ringing after a long ride at highway speeds, ( what? what? ) run ear plugs! the Foam ones for shooting work very well, almost as good are the E.A.R. models. You can also take a foam ( hearing protection )plug, poke a hole for the auditory tube on an ear bud, ( usually you have to shorten & DEBURR the tube to avoid ear pokeage ) and improve the noise isolation a lot. Regular hard shell Sony, Ipod, Koss, etc. earbuds are not worth the money. I've blown hundreds $$ on earbuds, and am still kicking myself for not going straight to the final solution....yet. +1 on the JVC w/foam +1 on the Skullcandy! I go through a set of headphones every few months. I use them at the gym, lunch, motorcycling, yardwork, etc. The Skullcandy ones have great sound and volume for the motorcycle, the silicon peice blocks out most other noise so you don't really need to crank it to hear the music | ||

I used earbuds for a while (shure e2c) and now I have the scala rider q2. I love it. My ears never get sore and I can use bluetooth with my gps and mp3's stored on the gps (bluetooth is mono not stereo like eh fm receiver). If I want I can direct line a mp3 player to the headset. It might be a bit more expensive than standard ear buds but I will never go back. Just another option. | ||

i use some slim speakers (put them behind the liner) that go to an intercom system and it leaves a female plug dangling 3-4 inches outside of my helmet - i then have a radio shack 6 ft cable ran through my jacket so that i can plug it into my helmet and tuck it into the strap while riding and i have about a foot hanging out the bottom of my jacket so i can plug it into my iPhone and put it back in my pocket - i like it cause i can still here whats going on around me | ||

I use either Ink'd earbuds, or my Cardo Scala rider on a modified 3rd gen ipod. I swapped the 20 gig HD out for a 16GB compact flash. So now, no more failed HDs. I added an iJet remote  http://www.abtech2.com/iJetBottomDock.htm I'm going to attach the remote, with heavy duty velcro to my left switchgear. With the Scala Ride, the volume needs to be pretty far up, almost maxed(I wear ear plugs as well). I'd been using the Bose . . . . not bad but my ears would get a bit sore after 5 or 6 hours. I met a fascinating guy at a Porsche Club meeting who's goes by "Earman" on the Porsche boards. Turns out he is the "in ear monitor to the stars guy and has an office above Carnegie Hall. I called the day after I met him, made an appointment and had a complete audiological exam. Then he made me a set of "in-ear" monitors that were curved to have a frequency response and fit for my ears. I used the on the recent ride to Clem's BBQ and they are almost TOO good. They block out ALL noise, you forget they are in and the sound fidelity is off the charts. I wish I could get a set with a mic included as well. The "farkelness" appeals to me but I'm really not sure I want to make/take phone calls. As it is now I see the call or text come up on the Zumo screen and I simply know to call at the next stop. Amazing technology. | ||

Steve, that amp isn't "about" the size of an Ipod, it IS an Ipod! That case looks IDENTICAL to the Shuffle I have (except mine's blue). ~SM | ||

I use IMC speakers in my helmet with an amp. It does pretty good for at least 4 hours. You can fine IMC head sets at Whitehorse gear on-line | ||

I found that my Zune was more than loud enough with quality headphones. My Zune recently stopped working and I've been using my Blackberry with music on it (new Storm touch screen), but even when it's turned up, I can barely hear the music on the freeway with a full face helmet and stock exhaust. I need to figure out how to fix the Zune... |
