Just bought a bike for my girlfriend's mother: a 2008 Sportster. It should still have some of the factory warranty left on it. What do I need to do get it transferred into her name? The guy we bought it from is a dealer and bought it ffrom H-D Financial... not sure if that means anything. |

The dealer should know... ask him/them. Should be as simple as filling out a post card and the two of you signing it. |

I got my Buell second hand. I didn't need to transfer anything, it should be good 2 years from the original in service date. |

Teeps - sorry, wasn't clear. Dealer as in a used car dealer, selling it through his business. Not an HD dealer. Thump - that's what I guessing - the warranty stays with the VIN and not the owner. |

I remember filling out a post card for the Buell to transfer the warranty. Seems like it was the last page in the owner's manual. |

Go to any HD dealership with ownership documents and a Service Advisor/Manager can bring up the warranty info. They can add your info into the system also. |

There is an SWR (Sales and Warranty Registration) Transfer Form that can be filled out. All it does is alert the Motor Company of the new ownership address in case of bulletins / recalls. The xfer form has a spot for date of transfer, est. miles at transfer, buyer info, and buyer/seller signatures. Factory warranty (and ESP if there is extended on the bike) stays with the VIN, and is based solely on the In-Service date. If you need to know the ISD, send me the VIN and I can run it for you. |

Great... Worst-case scenario. This bike must have been sold a week after the release of the 2008 models, lol. At least she'll have a warranty through the end of the summer. |

Just a quick word of advise, having been F&I at an HD Dealership, if she purchases an extended plan before the original warranty expires, it is cheaper and there is no inspection of the vehicle needed, and she can also get other items from the menu at that time, ie Road and Wheel coverage, death or disability payment coverage (subject to the lender) as well as LoJack or other items at that time. |
