I've spent all my time on my 12R up here at 5K' elevation. I rode to Tucson this weekend and WOW, these 12's have a lot of power down there. You must be careful in first, and it'll come up in second if you try a little bit. They say you loose 3% per 1000' elevation... That would be 15% for me. Anyway, I was impressed  . | ||

Hell a stock XB9R will come up in second with out trying.......... I was the one riding it at the time. | ||

Come and join us for some rides around Malibu (lots of nice canyons). You will learn to be careful on the throttle coming out of turns. The front comes off the ground all the time. Sea level definitely makes a difference. | ||

W/O trying eh??? You are saying a stock XB9R will power wheelie (none of that letting off to compress the springs or using the clutch stuff and not even pulling on the bars) in second gear? Just straight roll along about 4500 in second and whack open the throttle and it pulls it up???????? Hmmm..... | ||

My XB9S will lift the front wheel in second only if I do everything just right. | ||

Spooky is not making that up. I have (inadvertently) done exactly that on my stock XB9R (I don't know how to wheelie). | ||

My guess would be that the front springs were compressed a little somehow... I could be wrong though, I've never ridden a 9. | ||

combat I saw it in my mirror I was infront of him.and the 9's have had a bad rap about this. but yes they will do it. | ||

yep...that's right...just whack on it in 2nd and feel the front go light! Does it every time! No fancy clutching! | ||

My 9R will lift the front if I run the rpm up in first and then shift to second and get on the gas. I have never had it lift the front by just rolling on the throttle in 2nd. I think the seating position on the 9R and 9S may have something to do with it too. | ||

Well, glad to hear it. Just for the record... On the twelve I was leaned forward over the tank and I weigh 205. I let off the gas a little and opened it. It came up about 6-10" off the ground for a good 15'. First gear in the same position was VERY fun . It would come up leaned over the front at any more than about 25% over throttle pretty much anywhere in the rev range. Anyway, I was just excited since it was the first run at sea level for me . | ||

M1 now try this.Go about 55mph in 2nd gear then wack that throttle and let the clutch fly your 12 will and should do it into 3rd.Mine will,you just have to hit it just right. | ||

M1 remember that the 9's are geared 10% lower than the 12's. so they have almost the same rear wheel torque in first gear, i have ridden both, and they are pretty close in low end thrust. the 12's pull a LITTLE harder, but not a lot. also something i noticed is the heavier the rider( or passenger) the easier the front wheel launches. have had a few inadvertant wheelstands with wife on back of sportster. she is only 110 lbs, but makes it real hard to keep front wheel down in the lower 3 gears on sporty. removed passenger pegs from XB12 before i took it on the road, need to learn to ride it for a few thousand miles before i put any valuable cargo aboard. | ||

Blake, coming down from Prescott he drops into Phoenix which drops him down to 1000'+/-. M1 just head west out to Death Valley and make a quick trip thru there  | ||

....you can get third on the 9r too... mine has the race can and ecm along with the 12r airbox..same as second... close to redline and shift to third... In case you're wondering, I weigh 200lbs and tend to sit more to the rear. Be careful with them there rpm's...they're liable to kick some ass... Ed | ||

I can't get my XB9 to get off the ground in second without a lot of clutch and reving. 1st gear, no prob. 3rd gear?! I donno. | ||

Yeah same here. If I am running it hard, it may come up a little after shifting it into 2nd. If I really want it to come up in 2nd I have to get the rpm's up after I shift then dump the clutch. And I do ride at sea level. | ||

No 2nd gear power wheelie on my 9R either, front will get light, but won't stand up without some clutch work, at sea level. | ||

Me and Bubba were on the way back to the shop just left the light, cars were in front of us, cruising along in second gear, so the motor wasn't being tacked. The car turn off the road and I just twisted the wick....... up she came. Just let out of the gas a little bit and down she came nice and easy. | ||

My XB9S front end definitely gets light on the shift into second off my favorite hairpin on NY 44-55, I have never thought it was wheelying ( is that a word !)..but then I weigh 220 lbs. | ||

i am getting much better at the 1-2 shift wheelie. i am just starting to get the bike up and balanced as opossed to an acceleration wheelie. i won't shift in a whieelie on this bike. heeelll no. comes up nice though. hoping to get a little 2-3 shift action after some mods. |
