Ok - I am headed to get my Sat. night cigar and am on the interstate at 70 mph and my week old 08 shut down. I coasted to a stop, did the look for obvious damage inspection, and restarted without incident. Ran around for another hour - 50 some miles with no other problems. Seems to be running just fine, my question is has anyone else had a random issue like this?

A bad BAS (bank angle sensor) switch will cause these symptoms. Cycle the key or the kill switch and it resets and the bike will run. A bad switch seems to periodically trip for no reason. This was a problem on 06 and early 07 bikes; the switch was relocated further from the engine at the rear of the tail which mostly cured the problem, but they still go bad occasionally.

Ryat - that is exactly what happened, did not mention that it was still running, I turned it off fast in case something dire was taking place. I was actually on the throttle heavy when it quit responding. Have you had a reoccurrence?

i have only been able to ride a half dozen times to and from work, about 10 miles each way, and have not had the problem again. i will do a long ride this weekend.

when i had the problem i was using the heated grips, just slightly over filled the tank and was resetting the odometer. i dont know if any of those caused a computer glitch or something. i am thinking it was an electrical issue, the bike is under warranty so i will be taking it into the dealer in a few weeks to see if they can find anything.

I have been through these things more than a few times. If you take it to the service guys with a story about how it cut out at 70 on the highway, they have nothing to look for. If the BAS kicked off for a moment, it does not throw a code. They could have it for a couple of weeks and find nothing. On a rare occasion they could plug it in an get lucky having something show up on a test.

IMHO if it is back to normal, run it and feel the power. If it does it again, cycle the kill switch or key. If it fires right up like it did and runs fine you have proven the BAS may have caused it.

It is just that I hate to see you take it to the dealer with something you cannot prove(even if you had video). It's not that they won't believe you, but there is no hard evidence from the bike, that it had nothing other than a momentary problem.

This usually leaves people mad at the service department when the bike is in for a couple of weeks and no problem is found.

Oh, and for your safety, if it is the BAS, just know that if you are in traffic it can be re-fired quickly. Pull in the clutch, cycle the kill switch, hit the starter.

My '06 has had two BAS's go out. The first one had the bike quit on me at least eight times before the problem was figured out here on the BadWeB. I took the information from here to the dealer and proved the problem. They fixed while I waited. I had it in at least twice with this complaint(while in for other things)before it was fixed. Later a recall came out requiring the BAS be moved from under the battery to the back near the seat latch.

My 2008 did that once.
I hit the handlebar kill switch and turned it back on and it fired right up.

I told the dealer about it and they said to tell them if it happens again.
That was 8000 miles ago. Never happened again.

Problem solved! (Right?)

I agree on the dealer service dept., I dont want to take it in until I can tell/show them what is wrong, that is why I was going to ride it for a few more weeks trying to reproduce the problem. I dont mind taking it in as it is under warranty and I want to test ride the 1125CR.; ) Are people still having issues with the BAS, I thought that was resolved for the '08's? Is there any other sensors that might be an issue, I was also going to use this as a chance to add a battery meters and oil temp gauge, in case it was a battery droop issue or engine temp problem.

BAS issues only affect 06's and early 07's.

I never heard of a bad BAS on an 08 or 09, but it could happen. Some guys with 06/07's have had new BAS's fail even after the relocation mod.

I will be damn, it did it again today. Same thing 70-75 on the freeway and it shut down. By the time I got it to the shoulder the engine was not running. Once again the oil pressure light came on and when I cycle the ignition it started right up. Just like last time I went on to ride 120 miles on back roads at 50-70mph with no issues. Now the decision - to the dealer?? It is supposed to 70-80 and dry all weekend, based on the pattern so far the bike stays with me til next week at least.

Another question - I did the headlight mod (both on on high beam) this weekend, has anyone caught @#%$ from a dealer when a bike is taken in for warranty work when there is a mod like this? Especially considering that this may be an electrical thing (Incident #1 occurred before my rainy day garage work on the lights)

One of the Buellers here in Oz on our last ride had similar thing happen. It turned out the seat was rubbig the battery leads resulting in one of the wires breaking causing engine to cut out. A quick rode side repair had him going again. Something to check out.

I have had the headlight mod for a long time. It has never caused an issue when at the dealer for warranty.

You should be happy if your dealer noticed both headlights are on!

The bank angle sensor on my 06 began failing just like you described. It eventually got to be a fifteen to thirty minute interval between failures. I disassembled the BAS, figured out how the pendulum was supposed to be configured then siliconed it in place and reassembled. No problems since (probably 6-8 months and 10-15k miles ago). It won't kill the engine if tipped over, but I'm willing to risk it.

Happened again - rode all weekend and had no problems (350 + miles some fairly hard riding). I appreciate all the advice so far. Guess I am going to have to break down and take it to the dealership. This time I was paying a little more attention (even with trying to get three lanes over with no power). It is almost like the fuel supply shuts off??? (BAS symptoms again??) The bike stays running barely as I had the throttle wide open. I was able to keep the bike running although there was no power until I engaged the clutch, then it shut down. Cycled the key and it started as usual and ran fine for the next hour (same as last time). Figured I would tap the collective brains of this group one more time before the dealership. For the record I still love the bike !!!! My wife gave me crap today a our sidewalk cafe lunch when she caught me gazing at its awesomeness.

It does sound like the BAS is failing. The BAS can be reset just by cycling the kill switch quickly, so you don't need pull off the road if it happens again.

Update - finally relented and got the Uly into the dealership. Died twice on the way - It was the Idle Air Control Assembly that went out. Now what sucks is 5-7 business days for repair. Not sure if they have ever heard of priority shipping (guess it is on their dime but on my time).

That is the first time I personally have heard of an IAC crapping out. Easy fix though.

You might see if you dealership will let you 'test' ride another bike until yours is ready. My dealer did this for me. Technically they aren't suppose to, but when they keep your bike for that long, some do understand what it's like and will help you out.

I had a Honda XL 500 that would do the same thing. It just shut off, I would stop, and it would start back up.
It turned out to be the ECM!
