I have a 2001 X1 that I just purchased. The bike runs great, but I noticed that I could not get Neutral unless I was coasting. I've done alot of research on this site and decided because I don't know the condition of the primary tensioner I would replace it which seemed simple enough. Here is where it gets interesting and any info would be greatly appreciated. #1) The first thing that got my attention was when I removed the transmission drain plug I noticed that there were alot of metal filings that the magnet had caught. #2) When I removed the primary cover there were grooves ground into the top of the cover. I'm guessing the chain was too loose? Also the primary chain tensioner although in decent shape, has worn grooves on an angle. What would cause this? #3) I noticed that the shifter shaft had play in it. Up, down and side to side. Is this normal? I know there is a bushing in the primary cover which probably eliminates this but this takes me to my next question... #4) The shifter shaft looks like it was rubbing on the back of the starter ring gear. Is it possible that the bushing in the primary cover is worn out, causing excess play? I did notice some slight movement in the shaft before I removed the cover. The bike itself shifted beautiful before I took it apart aside from not being able to find neutral. The shifting effort is more than I'm used to, but I've read that this is the nature of the beast. A loose primary will cause alot of problems including the rub marks you saw.Check to make sure you have the updated primary shoe--it is much stouter the the old style--which was known to fail with catastrophic results.I will bet you shifting will be much better after you go back together as you will have adjusted your clutch and primary chain and have new primary oil--synthetic,right!! If you do not have a manual there is an S-1 manual in the knowledge vault that will have same adjusting procedures in it. |

I'm sure the primary chain was too loose causing the groves in the cover, it had the updated primary adjuster already installed but what I forgot to mention is I noticed the clutch basket has play. In and out I would think is normal, but it also can be pivoted on its axis. I would have to describe it as a "wobble". Is there a bearing that could have let go behind it? I have the manual and looks like there is. I am wondering how much play is acceptable. |

I think you may have found it. There should be no "wobble" in the clutch basket. A little in and out is OK but no wobble. Like Jim mentioned above, check the S1 manual, it will have the clutch structure so you can see the bearings and such. Sounds like you have a bit of work to do. None of it is hard, just take your time and user your service manual. You have one right? Brad |
