So my headers are rusting and i wanted to paint them black. Just bought some black high heat rustoleum spray paint and some sand paper. Is this a good start? |

Get them sandblasted then paint. Shouldn't cost too much to get them blasted... |

If you got the high temp or ceramic paint you are good to go, pipes on all early models are stainless I think, I had rust on my headers that was bleeding off the retaining rings (under the exhaust clamps). They are only a couple bucks from the dealer - if they are looking tired, looking at a receipt it was $2 for two of them, pn# 65325-83A. If you remove the pipes to paint you'll want to make sure and replace the exhaust gaskets too. Sandblast will help your paint stick better but I've painted headers on other bikes with good results with just sandpaper. |

I used to paint the steel expansion chambers on my two-stroke race bike with high-temp barbeque paint from the hardware store. It looks good and holds up at high temps. |
