i have a 99 m2 it runs great but i have a bad problem to where it dosent like to start. it pretty much starts when it feels like starting. i have a brand new battery in it and i had replaced the voltage regulator awhile ago. while the bike runs it charges so i no its not the charging system. im pretty sure its the starter but im not familiar with them. all that happens is that it turns over once and then when i try 2 start it again it just clicks. nothing else. any suggestions???? |

This is a common problem, often misdiagnosed. Disconnect the battery. Take the three bolts out of the starter solenoid cover plate. They're on the right side rear portion of the starter. The solenoid plunger and return spring will slide out. Inspect the ring contact on the plunger and the two contacts inside the solenoid housing. I believe you'll find that the contacts are severely eroded. The solenoid rebuild kit is about $25 from the dealer. Just tell them you have a sportster. The kit includes the contacts, posts, insulators, and plunger. What happens is that the plunger hits the contacts at the end of its travel, but since the contacts are eroded due to arcing, it fails to hit both contacts. One contact is usually more severely eroded than the other, so the plunger can't hit both of them at the same time. They're kind of a pain to change, but you can do it without removing the starter. |
