This is now in my 2001 S3T. I got the original ECM/muffler/airbox when I purchased the bike last January. I've heard that the original ECM has a cold weather warm-up, high idle routine built into its program. True? If so, that'd be beneficial to my riding style, especially on these cold mornings. I'd like to try that original ECM. I imagine I could leave the V&H muffler and ham can air cleaner on the bike with the original ECM? Is it just a matter of plug & play, letting the ECM calibrate itself on start-up, etc? Any info and/or comments would be appreciated. |

It has better cold starting programming, there is no high idle system. Basicaly the street ecm enriches the mixture based on air and engine temps I have watched this working with ECM spy I cant say for the race box |

I have had Race ECM's on both my S3T and my 12R. They made the bikes cold blooded IMHO. I have switched both bikes back to stock and prefer that set up. I would not run a stock ECM with your intake/exhaust setup. I feel there would be a risk of running lean. Just my 2 cents |

Not plug and play it will also need a TPS reset! +1 on the lean running |

Yeah, definitely don't forget to get the TPS reset done. Your new ECM doesn't have the offset programmed yet. It'll run like crap at part throttle. |

I'll occasionally ride to work at 40 degrees. No problems with a race ecm. As a caveat, most of my ride is a mile or two with a quick stop sign, so there's no real idle for the first 10 miles or so. I haven't seen an indication that it would try to die on me, though. |

Different strokes for different folks. My S3 runs better hands down with the race ECM than with the stock setup. The stock set up fouled plugs on startup -- a lot. It has never happened with the Race ECM -- but I do believe keeping it plugged into the battery tender helps with this common problem. I believe all the injected bikes would have come from the factory with the race ECM if they would have passed emissions -- I'd never swap back -- Just my two cents -- |

I run econowinder with race ecm and race header and muffler. I also think it made my x1 cold blooded, but once it warms up. FUN!!! |

it only takes a few seconds of holding the throttle at 1500 or 2000 rpm to get it to idle on its own.........whay sacrifice performance on the warm days for a few seconds of manual warm up? |

I experienced the same cold blood when I "upgraded" my stock ECM to Race ECM but I was able to modify the behavior by tweaking a few parameters using ECMSPY. You can play with the fuel "cells" in the idle area or change "cold start enrichment" values until you get a steady idle. Worked for me but took some trial and error. |

You should be good with the race ECM if you end up staying with it. I've riden all the way down in the 20s with it and it really only takes about a minute or so of holding the throttle at 1500 before it will hold its own idle. I've found it's best to slowly turn the throttle as you are pressing the start button till it fires up then hold. Trying to find the sweet spot before hitting the go button is a little more cumbersome. |

Ok, I'll stay with the Race ECM then and just twiddle the throttle at start-up. Thanks to all for the insights! Regarding the TPS reset mentioned. I take it this was done to my bike when a previous owner had the Race ECM installed; because it wouldn't be running worth a shi'ite unless this had been done? |

When I switched from stock to the race ECM, it was like getting a new bike! The flat spot coming off idle that would bog the engine then jump every time I turned a corner was gone. I did a dyno run before and after and hard data shows HP up 3 and torque up 3 and fuel air mixture leaner from too rich at points. Race ECM is the easiest and least expensive upgrade you can do. |

If the ECM is the old style i.e. does not have the hole in it for the xb exhaust servo it will do this. I have used both and i find the newer style one runs a lot better when cold. I have used both ecm's in under 20 degrees |

Riviera: "Regarding the TPS reset mentioned. TPS reset does have to be done on occasion. My 2000 S3 would stall at cold idle until I did the reset. I know it varies with the user but I seem to need a reset each season. +1 on Butler; "When I switched from stock to the race ECM, it was like getting a new bike!" |

Xodot, is this reset done by the dealer, or is it something I could easily and cheaply (no special tools) perform? |

Rivi: You need a computer and a 60$ cable the computer software is free, 1 2 3 ECM SPY can do that, it should be in your tool box, next to your beer, Okra, and C-gars BTW I think That AL actualy sells that cable and may provide the disks too. (Message edited by oldog on April 17, 2009) |

To express the obvious, make sure you download the "drivers" programs too... |
