Can someone please tell what the major difference(if any) is going to be if I go from a 170 to 180 rear tire? Thank you! |

My understanding (from reading another thread, not experience) is that a wider tire will give better traction in the straights, but not handle as well in the twists. |

I believe common wisdom is it will generally cause the turn-in to be slowed down slightly. I.E.- It'll take a little more effort to initiate a turn at speed. If you've got the Marchenisi (painted) wheels, I believe the rear wheel is the recommended width for a 170 tire. OTOH, if you've got the PM (polished aluminum) wheels, that rear wheel is slightly wider and is the recommended width for a 180 tire. I had PM wheels on my S3 and tried both 170 and 180 rear tires. I didn't notice a significant difference in handling either way. |

the way I understand it. 170 quicker turn in, quicker wear 180 slower turn in, longer lasting rubber, marginally more contact patch |

I don't ride my S3 hard enough on the street to really notice. I use either - depending on the "deals" I am able to get. I can get 180/55 take-offs really cheap so tend to run those more often. ... but that's just me. |
