Court,
I would like your advise on what to do. I have an 06 Uly and had the muffler valve actuator replaced under warranty last fall. On the return trip from Buelltoberfest my check engine light came on but the bike ran ok so I kept going. I checked the codes and found the actuator had faulted. I tested it and it was not working. Since my other bike was down for some improvements I didn't take the Uly in right away. Well I took it in today and they said that the new actuator is upgraded with steel gears but they won't pay for it. It seems to me that if the part was replaced under warranty and only lasted maybe a month and then they admit a design error that they should stand behind it. I wanted to bounce it off of you before I called Buell customer service. Do you think they warrant a phone call? I appreciate your advise and for helping out so many folks.
Thanks,
tootal

I'd call, be polite.

'06? Wasn't there an issue with one of the plastic gears on the servo actuator? I remember hearing about that when I first reported the CEL popping up on my 06 XB12Ss every now and then. When I checked the code, it indicated "Exhaust Valve."

That's when someone here told me that some of the '06 models had a poorly manufactured plastic gear (it had a piece of flash that occasionally got hung up trying to actuate the cable to the muffler valve).

I never got it fixed (clearing the code was enough, as it only happened once every couple of months), but I was told it was a simple warranty fix. Of course, here it is 2009 so the 2006 models are out of warranty...

Jaimec , I wouldn't be surprised at that. They said my gears were stripped. It only lasted a couple of weeks after they installed it. I told them to check the valve itself since if it hung up somehow, it might have caused the gears to strip. I have found dealer mechanics to mostly be part replacer's that don't diagnose the reason for failure.
Dave, I'm always polite.
I was even polite to the dealer when he told me the bad news! I'll give them a call on Monday.
Thanks.

I called Buell yesterday and got through very quickly where I met John. I told him my problem and gave him my information. I was polite! He looked up my records and they jived with what I had said. He said he would look into it and gave me a number. He said he would call back that night or the next day. I hung up, jumped into the shower, soaked my head and the phone rang. It was John calling to let me know that in the interest of customer service, or something like that, he was going to take care of the actuator for me. Have a nice evening! I swear it was less then 15 minutes from when I hung up. That is what you call service. Well done Buell!

: )

Jon, not John.

Typical . . . he's like that. I've said it time and time again . . . these folks are doing a tough job and doing it to the best of their ability.

They are committed and enthusiastic.

I'll pass on your feelings if it's okay with you.

These type of threads are one of the many reasons I am so glad I purchased a Buell. Between the people here and what seems to be an outstanding customer service department if there is a problem I feel like I have a whole team backing me up. Why would anyone ever want to leave this fraternity?

Tootal congrats and let us know how it all works out. In the relatively short time I have been a member of this board I have seen some amazing things done by BCS and Court. Amazing things that probably wouldn't happen with any other moto manufacturer including the mothership. I hope my love affair with this motorcycle and company never fades because I am so proud to be part of it.

Thanks for the correct spelling of Jon. 9 times out of ten I would have been right! And yes you may pass on my appreciation, by all means. I'm just waiting on the part to arrive and for them to put it on. That's ok, I'm dialing in the Road Glide carb anyway.
