Is this common for a bike with only 2500 miles on it? I cannot tell if the oil is from the breather bolts, lifter base, or base gasket. The oil seems to run around the base and down the side with the stand.... |

Early engines were notorious for leaky base gaskets and rocker gaskets as well. Spray some degreaser on it, run it and look for the wet spot. My 97 marks it spot in my garage more than my 1946 Flathead does. (Message edited by 4DWUDS on March 20, 2009) |

It's right on schedule for the rocker box gasket. The rear goes first, the front lasts about twice as long. The new metal style gasket fixes it. Be careful if you do the job yourself, and make sure you don't arc weld a box end wrench between the rocker box cover and the positive battery terminal. DAMIHK. |

You sure it's not seeping from around the push rod seals to there? |

Just for a point of interest: Replace the GASKET,cylinder head(rocker arm)Part Numbers 16778-84A and 16779-84B with one piece PN 16800-84 ... The NEOPRENE Gasket, rocker cover PN17353-89(lower), PN 17354-89(upper), and 17358-84A(inner) or if you hav up-dated to XB rocker arm covers GASKET PN 17353-89(lower) and pn 17358-84A, if in good shape can be PUT in the FREEZER for 2 hours and reused ... If you do not TORQUE the rocker arm cover correctly they will leek/weep with the possibility of distorting them ... "i" made up some SPECIAL TOOLS to do mine correctly !!! MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!!} |

Yep I thought it could be from the push rod seals...The oil spot is higher on that side. I am doing some more investigation, but might just do the gaskets for peace of mind.... |
