I have recently aquired a 2000 S3 and would like to know what I need to do to remap the ECM.Is this a better choice than buying an aftermarket unit? The bike runs well and has a V&H can on it with some head work. I don't have the actual build sheet on the heads so I can't say with certainty how much was done to them. The seller wasn't even selling it but sold it to me after I make several inquiries about how long he was going to let it just sit in his garage doing nothing. I have no reason to think that he misrepresented what he had done to the bike in the way of work. |

Pull the seat and see which ECM you have. If it is not already there, put the race ECM, it is the single, easiest and best performance and drivability increase you can do. If you're technical, you can download ECM Spy and completely remap fuel delivery, or destroy your ECM... |

Can you clarify the statement that you can "destroy your ECM"? I wasn't aware that it was possible to do this with ECM Spy. You could modify the maps so poorly that your engine would not run, but you should be able to reload the original maps, assuming you saved your original maps. |

You could download the program and the manual and read the manual VERY carefully. There are numerous cautions. Yes you could reload old maps, assuming you saved them properly. Back to the original question, does it have a race ECM? I've got NRHS Stage II heads and 1250 kit and the race ECM seems to handle it fine as it did when the engine was stock. |

Get ECM Spy and get a cable. Brakes2late is selling cables here. Make sure to download the required drivers also. I have a copy of a race ecm eeprom (2002 X1)that I can send you, it's the same maps as the S3. Just make sure to save your old eeprom to a safe place. You will also need to do a TPS and AFV reset after you load the new eeprom. It's much cheaper then buying a race ecm from the sealership and then having to pay them to reset your TPS. There are some here that just won't try using ECM Spy. I don't know their reasons but who cares? Let them be the ones to spend money getting a TSP/AFV reset. |

+1 on the ecm spy BIG money saver, I re-placed my ECM with the race ECM only because mine fried itself! But i love ECM spy. The best thing to come along since BUELL |

Eshardball, Spend some time studying ECM Spy before you use it and I think you will love it. I did a download of a buddy's race ECM, printed it and then took the time to change each cell value one at a time so there was no risk of loosing any data. As has been said above, it's a great program, makes a big difference in performance and it saves a ton of time and money. Just rear, read, read before you change anything on the bike. Call out if you need help. X |

Thanks so much guys.I have FI on my Road King and it is a PIA but it is a version that HD stopped using after only 2 years because of problems. The ECM spy seems like the way to go. The bike came with a fuel commander that was not installed but I'm hesitant to add another potential problem to the equation. With the ability to re program it, the Race ECM would seem like an unnecessary expense. The previous owner claims to have a program and cables but that may have been for the Fuel Commander. He is looking for it this week so we shall see. This is like having several hundred good friends willing to help you work on your bike at 3AM and they don't piss off your wife |
